Coimbatore Student Rape Case: Police Nab 3 Accused, Shoot Them in the Legs
              
            The recent college student gangrape near Coimbatore airport has sparked political outrage all over the state.
Many parties are demanding strict action against the offenders. The police shot at three men who raped the college student when they were trying to escape.
When surrounded, they retaliated by attacking officers with sickles, and injured a head constable on his left wrist and arm.
In response, police also injured their legs before taking them into custody. Kaaleeswaran, Thavasi, and Karuppasamy are the names of the suspects arrested.
Along with the accused, the injured police officer was also admitted to the Coimbatore District Government Hospital.
Unfolding The Coimbatore Rape Case Tragedy: What Happened
The incident occurred on Sunday night near the airport when the three men confronted the two college students.
They allegedly abducted the girl, took her to a secluded spot, and raped her before fleeing from the crime scene.
Her friend Vineeth later regained consciousness and alerted the police authorities, which led to swift rescue action.
According to a report by a news agency, authorities found the victim in a naked state. Severely traumatised, she was later admitted to a private hospital for treatment.
It was further reported that when the accused were trying to flee, they were chased by police who shot them in their legs in Vellakinaru.
During this encounter, a head constable was also injured.
Political Uproar
The Tamil Nadu rape tragedy has led to political uproar, where AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palanishwami criticised the DMK-led state government for failing to ensure women's safety.
He recalled the time of the former AIADMK rule, when women felt safe in Tamil Nadu. 
Condemning this horrific incident, Union Minister L Murugan said that the number of heinous crimes against women is still on the rise in the state.
With the announcement of a statewide protest by BJP state chief Nainar Nagendran, the party's Mahila Morcha president Vanathi Srinivasan labelled this incident another black mark on DMK rule.
Adding more to it, BJP leader K Annamalai said that ever since the DMK rule in Tamil Nadu, anti-social elements have no fear of the law or the police.
