Spirituality: Why is life empty, sometimes?
A room full of people, and still you feel you are standing alone. Has this ever occurred to you? There is always an empty void in our lives that we cannot fill, and we always feel something is missing. We have so much technology, faster lives, but there is always a part of our stomach that we cannot feed with our plates. It's the essence of the divine that we miss.
The purpose of life has been buried deep, and we forgot to pause. We forgot what we are meant to do. We don’t actually know what we want from life.
What are we asking for in life?
We are just running in space. We don’t know if it is real or not. We have made life so complicated that we don’t have time for ourselves. Understanding our inner wisdom is the purpose. All we feel is that the tag or the name that has been given defines us, the profession we choose, the relations we have, and what defines us, what the cosmic Being defines.
What about that connection?
We are lost in an ocean without a bareboat, so we don’t know why there is a void in our lives.
Performing rituals, customs, religion, waging war in the name of it, but have you questioned yourself? Is that what you are looking for? Why is it still bothering us? Why is there a void between God and Us after doing all the customs and beliefs we carry?
Fear
People fear they will miss out on things if they pause their lives for a minute to understand themselves. They fear they will lose. They won’t get what people define as success. The only fear is missing out on the fear, spirituality. They do follow customs but don’t understand it doesn’t question it. Neither do they have time for it.
People scare the divine people away with fear: if I do something bad, something bad will happen, but where is that spiritual connection? How to fill that void? No one knows, no one tries to understand, just going with a rhythm that has been followed by the centuries, and not understanding what it is not learning. What is it that gets me interested in it for my life, for people, and for forgetting to find my true self?
There is a saying that says people will forget about the divine. If there were no sorrow, they wouldn't worship the divine if there were no pain. Is this connection about fear or understanding yourself? Better your existence, better scrolling through phones is excellent, but isn’t it necessary for us to understand ourselves?
I understand that the divine doesn’t fall under our laws of physics; there is no end, no beginning, no timeline; he is transcendent and infinite. Which is why it becomes challenging for us to understand him, or the brain cannot process that kind of energy. We feel what we don’t see. We don’t understand it, as it feels like a danger to us; we don’t have a clear perspective of him. We don’t understand.
The illusion of material fulfilment
In today’s world, we all look for success. Success is having possession of material things. The more it belongs to us, the more successful we think of ourselves. A right paycheck, a big house, a fancy car, and a good profession. While these temporary distractions give us a fleeting amount of satisfaction, there is still a void.
The hierarchy of needs theory by Abraham Maslow explains that once your basic needs for physical and emotional fulfilment are met, a new level emerges: 'void.' Because things like food and security will take care of your body's needs, your heart will find fulfilment with your loving partner, but your soul will not. You see, when you reach the pinnacle of success and security surrounds you, you finally have the ears to hear this longing for Self-Transcendence. The void refers to this call to find something greater than self. This void does not signal that you are lacking something in the material world, but rather that you've outgrown this world and are now reaching for the divine.
A Space for Growth and Transformation
When you feel there is a void, you understand something is missing you need to achieve, but you need to know that this is nothing materialistic, but a soul remembering its wholeness.
There is a fascinating philosophy in Hinduism, that is Advaita Vedanta, which states the ultimate reality in (Brahman) and the individual Self(Aathma). It's nothing different from the rest of the world, being an illusion (maya). It’s the journey of the individual Self to overcome the illusion and to understand, understand this concept, that they are not different from ultimate reality.
This powerful metaphor is not only used in this philosophy but also in various other philosophies and religions. This is the intrinsic connection we somehow manage to forget when we are born into this earthly existence. The void in us is that forgotten memory, our soul wanting to return to its original state of wholeness and unity. It's not about an absence of something but rather separation from something we innately belong to.
The Call of the Soul: Remembering Our Wholeness
When a puzzle is missing a piece, we try our best to complete it. The void we feel is like the missing piece of a puzzle we are looking for, but while juggling other perspectives on life, we forgot to look for it, and the void remains. So when you understand there is a vacant space in your puzzle, look for it, and you might complete the puzzle.
