Artificial intelligence has slowly ingrained itself in our day-to-day life, where a single search will lead you to an AI- specified answer for your convenience.

Every website you open has AI embedded in some way: a chatbot for easy communication, a recommendation system to enhance the user experience, and content generation for consistent output.

AI is no longer just a tool we use; it has slowly become a wise supporter, a silent observer in our lives, one we value the most.

Assistive to Authority

For centuries, tools have existed to extend human ability, not replace human judgement. From simple machines to early software, technology always required human intervention and input.

Artificial Intelligence, however, has fundamentally shifted these century-long practices. AI no longer assists - It recommends what to watch, filters information, predicts our behaviour, and increasingly gets involved in our general decision-making.

Algorithms have slowly ingrained themselves even into the professional atmosphere. Which resumes will be shortlisted, whether a loan is approved, and even what news shapes our opinion. These systems operate quietly in the background, yet they greatly influence outcomes.

This transformation did not happen overnight. AI did not ask for this authority nor seize it. We willingly gave it, enjoying the convenience and efficiency that came along with it.               

As machines move from tools to decision-makers, an unsettling question emerges: when an algorithm decides, who is ultimately responsible for the consequences?

The Illusion of Objectivity

AI can never be objective and impartial. Why? Because in the end, it is created and learned from humans. AI systems learn from historical data created by humans.

When that data reflects existing social, economic, or cultural biases, AI cannot correct them; instead, it reproduces and amplifies them.

The bias becomes ingrained in its system, further creating a dangerous illusion that the decisions it makes are fair when, in fact, they are data-driven, data that can easily be manipulated.

Hiring algorithms, for instance, cause disadvantage to specific groups, credit systems can reinforce economic inequality, and predictive models may unknowingly target a particular community.

The automation of bias makes it difficult to question. Decisions appear technical and research-driven, yet in reality, they do involve judgment.

AI does not remove human bias- it cultivates it, embedding past inequalities in future outcomes under the cover of being a reliable, objective decision maker.

Efficiency Overrides Ethics

As AI systems promise faster decisions and less effort, many organisations are investing in algorithms over human judgment, seeing them as an easier option.

Hiring, lending, and customer service decisions are often automated in the name of efficiency, distancing human influence.

This creates a system in which no questions are raised about the decision, leading to complete acceptance of a decision made by a mere AI system.

Efficiency is now valued more than fairness, context, and human understanding.

Responsibility and Accountability Gaps

When AI systems cause harm, responsibility becomes dangerously unclear. Is it the fault of the developers who built the model, the company that deployed it, or the government that failed to regulate it?. This creates a loophole for accountability and responsibility.

​Who are we supposed to question? Who do we hold accountable for the wrongs of AI? Global regulations remain inconsistent, with big Artificial Intelligence agencies exerting influence over the so-called existing regulations.

AI can make decisions without any responsibility directed at it, granting it a dangerous form of unchecked power.

​Can AI Be a Decision-Maker?

AI does not have to become a threat to us if we are careful around it. One wise choice would be to keep humans involved in the development as safeguards.

AI supports decision-making but does not make a final judgment, allowing humans to make independent choices at the end.

An AI ethics framework is adopted by all Artificial Intelligence tools, forcing them to be fair, transparent and accountable. This allows humans to guide how systems are trained and deployed.

Environmental sustainability is also an important consideration. Efforts to reduce energy consumption and carbon footprint are essential.

Strong regulation and oversight are equally essential, ensuring that AI systems serve public interest rather than unchecked profit.

The goal should not be to reject AI, but to shape it in line with human values, responsibility, and long-term well-being.

​Artificial intelligence is evolving rapidly, whether we as a society are ready for it or not. The real question is not whether AI will influence our decisions, but how much authority and power we are willing to give it.

Decisions shape our lives and our surroundings; allowing a piece of technology to decide for us instead of our consciousness is wrong and horrendous.

Technology should exist to enhance human judgment, not replace it entirely.

When responsibility, empathy and ethical reasoning are removed from decision-making, efficiency alone becomes dangerous.
