India–China Dialogue Focuses on Western Border Management

India and China held discussions on border-related issues, where both sides discussed the management of the western section of the India–China border.

The talks were held at the Moldo-Chushul border meeting point on the Indian side. Both nations agreed to maintain regular dialogue with each other and continue their discussion through diplomatic and military channels.

China's Defence Ministry stated that the discussions between the two sides were positive and detailed. It stressed keeping the border region stable.

When China Described the July Border Talks With India As ‘Candid’

Earlier in July, the neighbouring countries had discussed the Eastern border situation along the LAC (Line of Actual Control), to which China described it as 'Candid'.

The meeting took place under the WMCC (Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination) framework.

At that time, the Chinese Foreign Ministry had announced that the next round of talks between the two sides would take place later this year (2025).

According to the External Affairs Ministry, the outcome of the talks in July was satisfactory, with emphasis on peace and tranquillity in the border areas, resulting in the gradual normalisation of bilateral relations.

By the end of the military standoff along the LAC in eastern Ladakh in October 2024, there had been signs of improvement between India-China relations.

Bilateral Meeting at the SCO Summit

In August, a historic bilateral meeting during the SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organisation) Summit in Tianjin had taken place between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping. In 7 years, it was the first visit of the Indian PM to China.

The outcome of the talks was described as 'fruitful' by Narendra Modi, based on the agreement between the two countries on sustaining peace in the border areas, and commitment to cooperation on mutual understanding and shared interests.

However, despite the agreement between the two countries to ease tensions along the India-China border, their troops continue to remain deployed.

Currently, each side has around 50,000 to 60,000 troops along the LAC in Eastern Ladakh.

Also, ever since the 2020 Galwan Valley clash incident that resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers and 4 Chinese troops, this has badly affected their bilateral relations.
