Congress leaders were very critical of the incident, describing it as untouchability. Kharge asked "Eighty years after Independence how can we have unity if untouchability still exists?"

Mallikarjun Kharge Comment on PM Modi: BJP leaders were equally incensed by Kharge's comments and accused the Congress of having lost all sense of political decorum and of launching personal attacks on Modi and his family.
In a post on X, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the Congress president had gone well beyond the bounds of propriety in his comment about the PM's late father. Shah said that Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge went well beyond the bounds of propriety in Patna by making an obscene comment about Modi ji's father.
He said the Congress had on numerous occasions used quite objectionable language against Modi and his family, referring to the remarks made about the PM's late mother, calling him a "merchant of death" and using the term "chaiwala" to ridicule his origins.
Amit Shah Reacts to Kharge, Says Congress is Fed Up After 12 Years of Electoral Defeats
Mallikarjun Kharge on Modi: Shah also said the Congress was fed up after 12 years of electoral defeats. According to him, the party was losing ground with the public and its own members, and the public had, in turn, responded to the comments about Modi and his family by voting against the Congress. JP leader Nitin Nabin also took issue with Kharge's comments, calling them "indecent and unparliamentary" and stating that the Congress had no political decorum.
Nabin on X said the opposition had to have some boundaries. He referred to Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders speaking about their deceased family members. He also noted that while Kharge's statement was a personal one, it did reveal a lack of decorum in the Congress party.
Nabin also said the opposition resorted to personal attacks as they had nothing of substance to say about development, policy or the welfare of the people. He said the voters were watching and would react at the right time.
Mallikarjun Kharge Latest News | Dharmendra Pradhan Aims at Kharge
Mallikarjun Kharge on Modi: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan took aim at Kharge too, saying the Congress was being openly hostile to Modi by resorting to personal attacks. That in itself was further proof of the party's dwindling credibility and its own frustration. He said the Congress president had a duty to maintain democratic values and public decency.
Pradhan referred to the earlier comments (regarding the PM's mother) and asked if the Congress had run out of arguments to challenge the PM.
Pradhan says the increasing public support for the PM has only served to increase the frustration of the Congress. He went on to say that people's trust in Modi is greater than the Congress' resentment.
He also said that in so far as you insult the democratic mandate, you will not be able to win the support of the people. Congress leader Husain Dalwai backed Kharge's criticism, saying it was a reflection of the anxieties that the government has generated over the past 12-13 years.
Government Made Several Mistakes, Caused Lot of Suffering, Says Dalwai
In Mumbai, Dalwai said the government had made a number of mistakes and had caused a lot of suffering. He said these were issues the President would be thinking about. The exchange has given rise to a fresh political spat between the BJP and the Congress. BJP leaders have been scathing in their response to Kharge's comment about Modi's late father, while a Congress leader has defended the wider criticism of the government.
BJP MP Sambit Patra Comments on Kharge’s Remark
Mallikarjun Kharge on Modi: BJP MP Sambit Patra took issue with Kharge's comment as well, suggesting the Congress leadership was simply frustrated that they couldn't unseat the BJP. He also took issue with Rahul Gandhi's leadership, with the implication being that even Congress workers thought the party couldn't come back to power under him.
Patra was clearly put out by Kharge's comment about the PM's late father and took issue with the language that political leaders use. He also stated that it was Rahul Gandhi and not Kharge who was the real leader of the Congress.
Patra called it absolutely reprehensible. Every single worker in the Congress Party knows the truth. Rahul Gandhi is the President. He's merely put Kharge ji in the position of President. Rahul Gandhi is the real President. Patra went on to say that as long as this non-functioning leader remains in charge, the Congress Party has no future at all.
In Bihar the CM Samrat Choudhary has also taken issue with Kharge's comments and has asked both the Congress president and Rahul Gandhi to issue an apology.

He referred to remarks attributed to Modi about a "50 crore girlfriend", Jersey cows and the Congress taking away women's mangalsutras. Baghel asked why the BJP leaders didn't object to such remarks.
