What Happened Near the Mosque in Delhi: Highlights

A demolition drive near the Syed Faiz Elahi mosque and graveyard at Turkman Gate turned violent when residents started pelting stones at officials and workers of MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi).

They were only executing orders from the Delhi High Court, but when the situation went out of control, it prompted them to use tear gas.

Besides them, five policemen also sustained minor injuries when they were attacked with stones by 25-30 people.

According to senior police officer Nidhin Valsan, the demolition drive was conducted at 1:00 AM to avoid any inconvenience caused to people.

But he never expected the violence would break out in return. Valsan also mentioned using minimal force during retaliation.

Adding further, he stated that after getting footage, it will be easy to identify the perpetrators who are behind this violent attack. After that, they will face legal action. Right now, the situation is under control.

The police also said that they have referred 100 videos to identify the accused. The visuals show people throwing stones.

A case will be registered based on the statements of the injured MCD workers and policemen.

Around 30 bulldozers and 50 dump trucks were brought by the officials to clear the illegal structures in the area.

Delhi HC Order Behind MCD Action to Clear Encroachments at Turkman Gate Ramlila Ground

The MCD demolition action plan was implemented after receiving orders from the Delhi High Court in November 2025.

It granted three months to the civic body and the Public Works Department (PWD) to remove 38,940 square feet of illegal encroachments at the Ramlila Ground near Turkman Gate.

In December, the MCD announced that all the constructions beyond 0.195 acres of land are supposed to be demolished.

No documentary proof from the managing committee of the mosque or the Delhi WAQF Board claims ownership or lawful possession of the land.

To mark the encroached area, MCD officials then visited the site on January 4, but faced backlash from the residents, which resulted in the deployment of police force.

Masjid Syed Faiz Elahi Case: Delhi HC Asks MCD, Waqf Board to Respond to Land Dispute

As per the petition filed by the Masjid Syed Faiz Elahi managing committee, notices were issued to MCD, Delhi Waqf Board, DDA, PWD, and L&DO by Justice Amit Bansal.

Seeking the importance of the issue, the Delhi High Court directed the authorities to submit their responses within four weeks.

April 22 is the date of the hearing of the matter. The mosque committee, which sought to cancel the MCD order, claimed that the land use and payment of lease rent to the Waqf Board were in dispute.

The committee stated that the land is a notified Waqf property, but has no objection to removing the illegal encroachments, including a baraat ghar and a clinic.

Their main concern is the land’s graveyard. Hence, MCD has stated that the leased land from 1940 will not be affected.
