US Embassy Attack in Baghdad Raises Tension in the Middle East

The Middle East conflict is unlikely to end soon. Recent news reports that the United States Embassy in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, has been bombarded with rockets amid a US-Israel joint attack on Iran. This situation has greatly heightened tensions across the region.

US Embassy Baghdad Attack

After the attack, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani ordered security forces to pursue those responsible for targeting the US Embassy.

However, the statement was unclear about who was behind the attack.

Al-Sudani’s office posted on Facebook that the attackers seriously threaten Iraq’s security and sovereignty.

These unlawful groups do not represent the Iraqi people.

US-Iran Tensions

According to a security official who spoke to a news agency, four rockets targeted the US Embassy in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone, an area that houses government offices and diplomatic missions.

This was the first attack on the Green Zone after the US and Israel carried out joint attacks on Iran last Saturday, which intensified the conflict in the Middle East.

Multiple Drones Shot Down Near Baghdad Airport

Recent reports say several drones have been intercepted near Baghdad airport since the conflict began.

On Friday, a drone targeted the Baghdad Airport complex, which includes both a military base and a US diplomatic facility.

It is still unclear who was responsible for the attack on the Baghdad embassy. Over the past week, there have been multiple attacks by the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), an allied Iraqi paramilitary group, against US military bases and other Iraqi facilities.

PMF Bases in Nineveh Targeted

The Iraqi government says a PMF fighter died in strikes on group bases in Nineveh.

The PMF, also called Hasd al-Shaabi, is a key organisation of Shia armed groups. Among these are those who have close ties to Iran.

Although these groups are officially part of the Iraqi army, some continue to operate independently.

A PMF official said an airstrike, likely by US forces, hit the southern PMF base in Mosul, Nineveh.

In related developments, Tasnim news agency reported that Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targeted separatist groups in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq.

The Kurdish region hosts camps and rear bases used by Iranian Kurdish groups.

They have contacted US officials about ground operations inside Iran. The IRGC warns it will crush separatists if they threaten Iran’s territorial integrity.

Explosions in the City of Erbil

On Saturday, explosions rocked the city of Erbil in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq.

Since the conflict began, drones have been repeatedly intercepted over Erbil, which hosts a significant US consulate complex.

Iraq, caught between the US and Iran, does not want to get drawn into a wider Middle East war.

According to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Iran will not attack neighbours unless attacked from their territory.
