Written in the Stars or Just in Your Head? The Psychology of Zodiac Signs and compatibility
Psychology of Zodiac Signs - For millions of people in the dating scene today, the question they often get asked is, "What's your sign?" For some, it's a real deal breaker, a relationship killer; for others, it can be a curious conversation starter.
But behind the headlines in supermarket tabloids and Internet memes is a long-standing system of personality profiling or relationship-scenario engineering, rooted in ancient tradition!
As a sceptic, a believer, or someone in between, understanding the science behind matching zodiac signs can present a different way to look at relationship building. Is it a guide to finding your soulmate, or an advanced method for defining personality?
The Blueprint of Connection: Deep Compatibility
When we discuss compatibility, we're not simply discussing whether there's good or bad. What is examined is how elemental energy is expressed. There are twelve total signs, divided among four elements: Fire, Earth, Air, and Water.
The general rule is that those who share an element, or those from "harmonious elements" such as Fire & Air, and Earth & Water, are going to be compatible with one another.
Some of these star pairs that are typically said to have the most potential to go hand-in-hand include:
- Aries (The Pioneer) & Libra (The Diplomat): Aries represents the spark and shows the initiative, whereas Libra represents the balance and the harmony in the relationship.
- Taurus (The Provider) - Scorpio (The Transformer): This is a very physical, very intense combination. The stability/security that Taurus is capable of providing is something Scorpio requires to comfort its vulnerable/transforming side.
- Leo (The King/Queen) - Aquarius (The Visionary): Leo feeds on individual warmth and attention, while Aquarius focuses on the larger universal scale or the collective whole.
Is It Science, Math, or Mystery?
The issue of whether this system is ‘scientific’ depends on what you consider to be ‘scientific’. Using today’s scientific definitions of ‘reproducible experiments under a controlled environment,’ this system is far from ‘scientific.’ However, using this system as a type of Cosmic Mathematics might be the answer.
The Mathematical Precision
This old method is based on the Sidereal Zodiac. This calculation is based on the current observable positions of the stars, rather than their known positions 2,000 years ago. It takes into account the Precession of the Equinoxes, so it is more astronomically accurate in terms of the position of the planets.
It works on the principle of the Law of Karma (Cause and Effect). It emphasises that the universe is an ordered place and the timing of the birth is a mathematical probability of earlier actions.
The ‘Social Science’ of the Past
Before the dawn of modern psychology, this system operated as a tool of Social Engineering. An evaluation of the Guna Milan theory of the 36-point test for couples allowed the people of the past to accurately forecast if the pairing would have money troubles, health issues, or emotional upsets.
Of course, a skeptic will insist on calling this process determinism, but a practitioner will recognise it for what it is: Data Analysis of the Soul. It does not mean to suggest that the stars force actions; only that they show the way of least resistance for your life to go.
How Seriously Should You Take It?
In the East, it is taken with the utmost seriousness in many instances, at times deciding whether a marriage should proceed. It should be used in modern life only as a diagnostic tool.
- Use it as a Map, Not a Cage: It is analogous to a Life Map in the sense that if the life map indicates the presence of a mountain on the road, which is analogous to a phase of conflict, the driver of the car does not simply apply the brakes. They prepare the car properly before driving, thereby driving more carefully.
- Compatibility Scores: A low score between two signs does not mean the relationship will fail; rather, it indicates the two individuals will need to make extra efforts to connect with each other’s ‘emotional language.’
- Personal Growth: The highest use of this knowledge is personal awareness. For example, if your moon sign has anxiety problems, you can be aware of it and practice mindfulness instead of blaming your partner.
- The 'Fun' Factor: Even though you may not believe in karmic math, the pleasure in the moment that the words have captured your lover's personality cannot be denied. There is a level of comfort that couples can have when discussing differences with one another, which doesn’t have to feel like a personal attack. Instead of saying, 'You are aggressive and have no reason to be, saying ‘Your moon is in a fire sign, you need to vent your anger very fast’ can actually lead to a far more pleasant discussion.
The Verdict: The Harmony of Logic and Intuition
Ultimately, the old model represents a combination of astronomy (the math), psychology (the archetypes), and philosophy (the reason or use). Whether it is true from a lab or scientific standpoint is less important than whether it works well for your life.
Some of the most successful relationships in the world were not put in the stars; they were placed in the decisions people make every day. However, having a cheat sheet for understanding those decisions, having the heavens themselves guide us, certainly doesn’t hurt!
By analysing these various lunar cycles and looking at the more in-depth places in the heavens, we find a much more complex and nuanced way to look at relationships than could ever be found with a sun sign horoscope!
