What Is Ahoi Ashtami? Know the Vrat Katha, Puja Vidhi and Significance

Ahoi Ashtami is the 8th day of the waning moon in the month of Kartika and occurs four days after Karwa Chauth and eight days before Diwali. It is a fast in honour of Ahoi Mata (a form of Parvati), said to protect children and guard the family. On this day, mothers fast without water from sunrise until evening, break the fast after the stars appear, and offer arghya. In 2026, the Vedic Panchang states that the Ashtami tithi begins on Sunday, 1 November, at 2.52 PM and ends on Monday, 2 November, at 1.11 PM.

What is Ahoi Ashtami?

Ahoi Ashtami is also known as Ahoi Aathe. On this day, mothers pray for their children's health, long life, and prosperity. It differs from other fasts because Ahoi Ashtami rituals are completed at the appearance of the first stars in the evening rather than at moonrise. Because the moon rises late at night in Krishna Paksha, families offer arghya to the stars, allowing them to complete their prayers earlier and with greater peace.

Ahoi Ashtami Vrat Katha

Ahoi vrat katha revolves around the story of a woman who lived near dense woods with her husband and seven sons. Before Diwali, she went out to collect clay to repair her house walls. While digging, she came upon a cave underneath and accidentally injured a baby porcupine called Syahu. She was deeply upset, and on her return home, she was in deep sorrow. Over the ensuing months, she lost all seven of her sons and was utterly heartbroken.

The older women of the village told her that on the 8th day of Krishna Paksha in Kartika she should go to Ahoi Mata and ask for forgiveness. She painted an image of Ahoi Mata on her house wall with ochre paste, observed a strict fast, prayed with great devotion, and cared for the sacred cow. Ahoi Mata was so moved by her faith that she returned her children to her. From that point on, the mothers of the village have observed this fast every year in order to protect their children.

Another element of this tradition is the silver Syahu garland. The mothers wear a necklace with a silver Ahoi Mata pendant and silver beads, adding a new bead each year. During the puja, they wash the pendant with water and milk, offer it roli and akshat, and wear it until Diwali.

Step 1

In the first step, leave the bed early during the Brahma Muhurat (before sunrise). Remove unwanted clutter from your house, then purify yourself by taking a morning bath. Wear clean, well-ironed clothes on Ahoi Ashtami. The colours to wear on this day include maroon, red or yellow.

Avoid colours like black and navy blue on this sacred occasion. So please keep this in mind. Now sit facing east. Before sitting on the asana, make sure it is cleaned. Take a little water in your right palm, along with Akshat and a flower petal and do the Sankalp. Pray to Maa Ahoi to bless you and your loved ones with good health and prosperity.

Step 2

Set up the sacred altar in the late afternoon (before sunset) against a clean wall facing north or east. Traditionally, the women will paint the image of Ahoi Mata on the wall with Geru (red ochre paste) and rice flour paste. The main image must be of Ahoi Mata with eight corners. It must also feature the sun, moon, stars, and seven cubs around her.

Place a clean wooden chowki (a small table) covered with a red cloth in front of the image. Place a brass kalash (a small pot) filled with water on a bed of raw wheat grains.

The earthen karwa pot must be placed next to the kalash. It must be filled with water and should be covered with earthen saucer having raw wheat grains and a four-wick ghee diya.

Step 3

Start off by placing your silver Syahu pendant and silver beads on the altar plate. Gently wash the silver beads with raw milk and then rinse them with clean water. Place the sacred roli and akshat on the pendant. Offer fresh marigolds, raw water chestnuts, radishes and sugarcane to Ahoi Mata. Make your own naivedya with 8 sweet wheat puris and halwa. Some people will also put 14 sweet pua on the altar as a traditional way of wishing for prosperity in the family.

Step 4

Ask your kids and family to gather round the altar. Take seven whole wheat grains in your left hand and cover them with your right. Recite the story of Ahoi Ashtami Vrat Katha to everyone. It's a story of forgiveness and a mother's sacrifice and is a great way of building devotion and good values at home. After the katha do the Ahoi Mata aarti with a brass diya. While performing the aarti move the flame in circles. When you've finished, set the wheat grains aside to be offered to the sacred cow the following morning.

Step 5

When it gets dark go out to your terrace, balcony or courtyard. Look up and find the first stars in the evening sky. That's when your fast is over. Take a clean earthen karwa pot or brass lota, fill it with water and face the stars. Pour the water slowly over the ground as an arghya. Make a quiet prayer for the safety and long life of your children.
