Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Storm: How Rinku Singh Lost His World Cup Spot

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Storm: The announcement went mostly unnoticed. Fans were focused on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s long-awaited selection, Shreyas Iyer becoming captain, and Suryakumar Yadav being left out.

In the background, another update was easy to miss: Rinku Singh, a recent T20 World Cup winner, was not picked for the next T20I series.

Rinku was not given a break, nor was he dropped for poor performance. It seems he missed out simply because there was no space for him in the batting lineup.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Storm: Sooryavanshi’s Stunning IPL Season Earns India Spot

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Cricket Journey: Sooryavanshi’s outstanding IPL 2026 season made him impossible to ignore, and any doubts about whether he was ready quickly faded away.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar even called his selection "forced."

He scored 776 runs, won five individual awards, and got backing from former players and experts like Sachin Tendulkar.

With achievements like these, his selection seemed certain.

India T20 Squad: But bringing in a new player meant someone else had to make way, which changed India’s batting lineup.

Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Ishan Kishan were among India's three specialist openers in the T20 World Cup squad.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Latest News: Why India Picked Sooryavanshi and Kept Ishan Kishan at No. 3

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Storm: During the tournament, they changed their plan. Samson opened with Abhishek, and Ishan moved to No. 3, a spot where he had already done well before the ICC event.

This shift pushed Tilak Varma further down the order, where his ability to handle fast bowling made him a strong finisher.

The selectors have mostly kept this plan for the upcoming matches against Ireland and England, and for the Asian Games.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi India Call-Up: Since they needed another opener, Sooryavanshi was an obvious choice.

Ishan, who played at No. 3 for Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2026, is expected to stay in that position for India.

Rinku Singh Left Out: Iyer Takes Charge but Rinku Pays the Price in Squad Reshuffle

The new captain, Iyer, will probably bat at No. 4, with Shivam Dube and Tilak following him.

With Hardik Pandya unavailable, Nitish Kumar Reddy might also join the team, followed by the all-rounders and bowlers.

After the selectors settled on this lineup, there was simply no space left for Rinku.

Rinku Singh Team India: Specialist Batter, Tough Results

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Storm: Rinku is a specialist batter, but head coach Gautam Gambhir clearly prefers players who can contribute in multiple ways and values having all-rounders in the squad.

Tilak faces a similar challenge, at least on paper. But by making him vice-captain, the selectors have made it clear how they see the team’s future.

Unlike Tilak, who can bat in several positions even though he’s usually a finisher, Rinku was limited to just one role.

Since last September, he has mostly batted at No. 7 or No. 8 for India and faced only 88 balls in nine innings.

Still, he made some important contributions, like a match-winning 44 not out against New Zealand earlier this year and the memorable boundary off his first ball to win the Asia Cup final against Pakistan.

In the end, IPL 2026 did not boost his chances. He was the vice-captain of Kolkata Knight Riders and was seen as a potential future leader.

He scored 295 runs at a strike rate of 150, with two half-centuries and an unbeaten 49.

These were good numbers, but not exceptional. years, that would have been enough.

But this year, with a 15-year-old scoring 776 runs and breaking records, being solid was not enough.

Is Rinku's Time Running Out?

Not really. Rinku, the youngest India cricketer, is only 28 and still in his prime. If injuries happen, if other players lose form, or if the finisher’s spot becomes available again, he is still the kind of proven, mentally tough match-winner India often needs.

The door is not closed for him. For now, it is just shut.
