The Indian stock market will come to a halt for three upcoming holidays in October 2025. During these days, NSE and BSE will observe 11 closure days, including Saturdays and Sundays. The main reason behind the closure is the Muhurut trading session to take place in Diwali.

List of Stock Market Holidays in 2025

The major upcoming holidays that mark the closure of the Indian Stock Market include:

  • Gandhi Jayanti and Dussehra on 2nd October
  • Diwali and Lakshmi Puja on 21st October
  • Balipratipada on 22nd October
  • Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev on 5th November
  • Christmas on 25th December

Additionally, trading on the MCX (Multi-Commodity Exchange) and currency derivatives will also be suspended for the three days.

Muhurat Trading Session 2025: What is it & When will it take place

According to an announcement made on September 22 by the NSE and BSE, the Muhurat trading session for Diwali will take place on October 21 this year.

The timings for it would be 1:45 pm to 2:45 pm, and 2:55 pm for the deadline set for the trade modification.

In the circular by the National Stock Exchange, it mentioned that all the trades implemented during this session will be an outcome of settlement obligations.

Understanding the concept of Muhurut trading session, it signifies that a special one-hour trading session will take place during Diwali to mark the beginning of the Hindu Calendar year, also known as the new Samvat.

In 2025, it marks the start of Samvat 2082. Usually, it is scheduled in the evening, but this time, it will be in the afternoon.

During this time, trading will take place in different segments, including currency derivatives, SLB (Securities, Lending and Borrowing), and equity futures.

Over the years, despite low indulgence, the outcome of the Muhurut trading session has been positive. Over the past 16 years, market trading has increased 13 times.

Last year, the BSE Sensex surged to 335 points, and the Nifty 50 accelerated with 99 points.
