Bihar Rajya Sabha Election 2026: NDA Wins All 5 Seats

In the 2026 Rajya Sabha election, the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) won all five seats in Bihar on Monday. They applied a clear strategy in clinching the fifth seat.

The opposition faced a setback after four of its legislators skipped the vote, which reduced its numbers.

Rajya Sabha Election Result: Who Are The Winners

The winners of the Bihar Rajya Sabha election include Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) president Nitish Kumar, who will begin his new journey in the Rajya Sabha.

The other winners are Union Minister Ram Nath Thakur, Rashtriya Lok Morcha chief Upendra Kushwaha, BJP national president Nitin Nabin, and BJP leader Shivesh Kumar.

Absence of Opposition MLAs Weakens Numbers

While the NDA confirmed its 202 legislators' early voting, the absence of four Opposition MLAs reduced the Opposition's strength to 37.

Among the Congress legislators who were absent were Manohar Prasad Singh, Manoj Biswas, Surendra Prasad, and one RJD MLA.

Bihar Seat in Rajya Sabha: Shivesh Kumar Crosses 3,099 Votes

The turning moment came in the second preference vote count, when Shivesh Kumar gained 4,002 votes in the third round, surpassing 3,099 votes and claiming victory for the NDA’s fifth candidate.

This resulted in the knockout of an opposition candidate during this stage. The second preference is considered when candidates don’t get the required first-preference votes.

In this Rajya Sabha election, both the NDA and the Opposition failed to reach the initial target of 41.

RJD Ahead of NDA in the First Count Vote: Tejashwi Prasad Yadav

Bihar NDA Seat: According to Opposition leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, the RJD candidate is ahead of the NDA, having earned 37 first-preference votes compared to the NDA's 30.

But both candidates still failed to achieve the required number.

As per JD(U) minister Lakhendra Paswan, Nitish Kumar and Nitin Nabin each earned 44 votes, while Ram Nath Thakur and Upendra Kushwaha each got 42 votes.

Ultimately, Shivesh Kumar had an advantage with second-preference votes.

What Was NDA’s Strategy in the Bihar RS Poll 2026?

Regarding the NDA’s strategy in the Bihar Rajya Sabha poll, JD(U) working president Sanjay Kumar Jha stated that the alliance was prepared for second preference voting.

His words were, “We knew that if candidates fell short of the threshold, second preference votes would become decisive. We had an advantage there, and that is exactly what happened.”

Even though the Opposition did earn support from five AIMIM MLAs and one BSP legislator, the internal rift within the Congress weakened its chances.

The absence of three Congress MLAs with a history of switching parties raised speculation about a possible political move.

BJP Accused of Poaching Legislators

Bihar Congress President Rajesh Ram has alleged that the BJP was trying to lure MLAs and that the party was in touch with the missing MLAs until March 13, before contact was lost.

RJD Red-Faced Over Its MLA Skipping Voting

RJD (Rashtriya Janata Dal) fumed over its MLA, Faisal Rahman from Dhaka, who skipped voting despite multiple calls from party leaders. Rahman, who is close to Tejashwi Yadav, was reportedly in Delhi.

According to RJD spokesperson Shakti Singh Yadav, the outcome was affected by pressure and money power.

In response to him, JD(U) minister Ashok Choudhary denied the claim and stated that the Opposition contested the election without ample support.
