8 Congress MPs Suspended in Lok Sabha

On Tuesday, eight Congress MPs faced suspension from Lok Sabha for their unruly conduct after two days of disruptions in the house.

The chaos occurred over the unpublished memoir of former Army chief MM Naravane, cited by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi while addressing the India-China border issue.

MPs Suspended from Lok Sabha

The names of Lok Sabha MPs suspended are Prashant Padole, Gurjeet Aujla, Manickam Tagore, Dean Kuriakose, Hibi Eden, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, S Venkat Raman, and Kiran Reddy.

Following the suspension, Congress MPs, led by Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, staged protests outside Parliament.

Reason Behind Congress MPs Suspension

The recent political controversy that sparked is linked to a Caravan magazine article.

It is based on a memoir by former Army chief Manoj Mukund Naravane, yet to be published.

According to the article, India’s political leadership seemed unsure during the 2020 standoff with China.

This book was supposed to be released in January 2024. However, after an extract appeared in December 2023, its publication was delayed as the Army didn’t approve it.

Last year in October, Naravane stated that the book is still being reviewed.

Parliament Budget Session: What Triggered The Unruly Scenes

The Lok Sabha witnessed constant disruptions for over two days, with MPs led by the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi demanding a discussion on a crucial issue.

On Monday, the proceedings were halted for 40 minutes. Speaker Om Birla mentioned parliamentary rules 349 and 353.

According to these rules, the house does not permit discussion on any unauthorised material.

He further stated that it requires prior notice to make allegations against another MP.

However, Rahul Gandhi paid no heed to it and continued raising the issue.

Every time he made references to China and the former Army chief, he faced objections from senior ministers and the Speaker, who said this violated parliamentary rules.

They also told Gandhi that the matter is not linked with the discussion on the President’s address.

Rahul Gandhi Submits Signed Caravan Article in Lok Sabha

The matter resurfaced on Tuesday, with Rahul Gandhi submitting a signed copy of the Caravan article in the House for verification.

As per parliamentary rules, it is necessary for members to submit signed documents confirming their accuracy before mentioning them.

When the situation in the parliament turned unruly, it forced BJP MP Krishna Prasad Tenneti to rebuke opposition leaders for their casual approach to the Speaker.

He criticised them for using the word ‘Yaar’ while referring to the Chair and reminded them that such language is not acceptable in Parliament.
