We'll Shoot First, Talk Later: Denmark Warns US as Greenland Dispute Hots Up

As the matter of the Greenland dispute heats up, Denmark’s Defence Ministry has given a clear warning that if the US tries to invade Greenland, our commanders will direct our soldiers to shoot first and then talk later.

Referring to the 1952 directive from the Cold War era, the ministry told a local newspaper that troops don’t have to wait for commands in case of a threat on Danish territory from a foreign force. They can simply shoot.

The directive was made when Nazi Germany launched an attack on Denmark in April 1940. It affected communication systems, which still exist in the place today.

It is up to the Joint Arctic Command in Greenland to determine what counts as a threat on the island.
