‘Military Always An Option’: Donald Trump Discusses Greenland Acquisition

After having authority over Venezuela, followed by the capture of its president, Nicolas Maduro, during a US military operation, Donald Trump now sees the acquisition of Greenland as a national priority.

According to White House, the American military has always remained an option. This statement has raised tensions between the United States and Denmark, a key NATO ally.

The warning came despite Greenland and Denmark's willingness to meet with US officials to clear misunderstandings between them.

But the talks didn’t take place. This renewed interest in Greenland by Trump is connected with the current US military strike in Venezuela, which has raised serious concerns on the global front.

Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory in the Arctic, is known for its treasure of rare earth minerals. It holds importance for its polar melting ice that opens the new shipping routes.

Authority Over Greenland is a Prime Goal For the United States: Karoline Leavitt

White House Secretary Karoline Leavitt says that having authority over Greenland is a prime concern for the United States.

According to her, it is essential to stop the growing influence of the rivals Russia and China.

She further stated that the Trump government is making every possible effort to achieve this target. It will encourage military action when needed.

The United States' new goal and its comment have become a serious matter across Europe, as this will weaken the US and the European allies' relations.

No Response Yet as Greenland, Denmark Seek Talks With US Over Misunderstandings

Greenland’s Foreign Minister, Vivian Motzfeldt, has said that both Greenland and Denmark have requested a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in 2025, but no positive outcome has come so far.

According to Denmark’s Foreign Minister, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, if the meeting is held, it will help resolve the misconception between the nations.

Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Fredrik Nielsen also said that Greenland is not for sale and people here can decide their future.

Among the European countries, including Poland, Britain, Germany, and Spain, they have come in support of Denmark and have stressed the importance of valuing national borders. Nielsen has expressed his gratitude for their support.

On his relations with India, Donald Trump commented on PM Modi, saying he is not happy as they are pressured to pay a lot of tariffs now.

Returning to the Greenland issue, Donald Trump has suggested that his decision to acquire it will happen within two months.

He further clarified that it will be done once the situation in Venezuela normalises after the arrest of its President, Nicolas Maduro, by US forces.

Arctic Security Crucial for Both International & Transatlantic Stability: European Leaders

European leaders who are criticising Trump’s next step in acquiring Greenland, also stated that this will prove harmful for Arctic security from both international and transatlantic stability.

They also stressed that Denmark, including Greenland, is a member of NATO. Hence, the Arctic security cannot be compromised.

French President Emmanuel Macron has made it clear that Greenland belongs to its people, hence it is not right for the United States to violate its Danish sovereignty.

According to Danish officials, heavy investments have been made in Arctic security in recent years.
