On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump claimed that Indian PM Narendra Modi assured him that India will no longer buy oil from Russia. Speaking to the ANI news agency, the United States president expressed his dissatisfaction with the purchase of Russian oil by India. Emphasising his strong relationship with Narendra Modi, he described him as a good friend.

Donald Trump Hails India's Stance On Russian Oil, Expects China To Follow The Same

According to Trump, the Indian Prime Minister has assured him that he will put a stop to the import of Russian oil, a move he called a ‘Big Step’. After this, he expects a similar decision from China as well.

Reuters quoted Trump saying, “There will be no oil. He’s not buying oil,”. He further clarified that there will be no immediate effect right now, but it will happen within a short period of time.

Recalling the 50 per cent tariffs imposed on India by the US President, it included 25 per cent duties on the import of Russian oil.

The comments by Donald Trump came just a week after the claims made by his trade representative, Jamieson Greer, stating India's diversifying stance on Russian oil imports.

It came amid the constant efforts by the United States to end India-Moscow energy trading.

At the Economic Club of India, Greer spoke about India’s practical approach in distancing itself from Russian oil imports.

Calling India a sovereign country having control over its decisions, he added that the United States is not dictating the country’s relations with other nations.

He once said that if India refuses the energy supply from Russia, it will face certain losses.

The Russian President further added that the people of India closely adhere to the political decisions made by their leader, and won’t tolerate humiliation in front of anyone.
