Jaishankar discusses the Middle East crisis with Iran's FM Araghchi
Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, India’s External Affairs Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, spoke by phone with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi.
Jaishankar officially acknowledged this communication in a statement on X, noting his discussion with his Iranian counterpart.
Meanwhile, India also expressed condolences over the demise of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
India Expresses Condolences On Khamenei’s Death
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi and expressed condolences on Khamenei’s death on behalf of the Indian government.
The gesture came after Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei’s death, who was killed during the joint military action by US forces and Israel Defence Forces via an airstrike on February 28, 2026.
Following his death, the situation in West Asia has become serious.
During the visit, the Ministry of External Affairs also released a photograph of a meeting between Misri and the Ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali.

India Calls for Peace Talks in Iran-US Conflict
Earlier this week, India even requested that all sides have a dialogue to put an end to this ongoing Iran-US war as soon as possible.
The government highlighted the importance of saving the lives of 10 million Indians living and employed in West Asia and of preventing disruptions to trade and energy supply chains.
Concerns are rising following the Strait of Hormuz closure, which has led to a surge in global oil prices.
QatarEnergy, one of the world’s largest exporters, halted production in the natural gas market after attacks on its facilities.
Such developments have raised concern for India, the second-largest crude importer. It relies on imports to meet nearly 85% of its oil requirements.
India has restated that the region’s major disruption could lead to negative economic outcomes, while stressing the security of Indian citizens abroad as its top priority.
