West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee’s recent remark on the Durgapur gangrape victim has sparked outrage.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has also slammed her for controversial comments, saying girls should avoid venturing outside at midnight and targeted her for failing to maintain law and order in the state.

However, the criticism did not affect TMC; instead, they lashed out at the BJP for politicising the incident.

Mamata Banerjee Is a Blot On Womanhood, Says Gaurav Bhatia

As per the statement given by the TMC leader, the victim was studying at a private medical college. Hence, it is the responsibility of private institutions.

They must be questioned on how students are permitted to be out at 12:30 at night. She also added that the incident has likely occurred in the forest area. The investigation is currently in progress.

Slamming Mamata Banerjee for her insensitive comment on the alleged Durgapur gangrape of a medical student, the BJP national spokesperson called her ‘shameless’ and ‘a Blot on Womanhood’ on X.

According to Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar, does she mean women should start wearing a burqa to protect their modesty and stay confined to their homes?

He made this statement, citing the notice issued to private companies, post the incident at RG Kar Medical College, directing them to reduce night shifts for women.

Terming the comment of Mamta Banerjee ‘absurd’, Archana Majumdar, member of NCW (National Commission for Women), opined on how it can be possible for a girl to lock herself in a room for 12 hours a day.

Targeting Mamata over her alleged insensitive remark, BJP West Bengal Secretary Priyanka Tibrewal, said that women are working in hospitals and the IT sectors, and are equal to men everywhere. They are making India proud by winning gold in the Olympics and visiting space. Yet we expect girls to remain in the house after 9 or 8 PM.

Further criticising the insensitive remark, she said that instead of putting the perpetrators behind bars, the Chief Minister of Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, is simply shaming the poor victim just because she moved out of the hostel.
