PM Modi Congratulates Tarique Rahman on Leading BNP’s Big Election Win

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed heartiest congratulations to Tarique Rehman on sweeping the Bangladesh Nationalist Party towards near victory in the national elections on Friday.

While posting on X, PM Modi congratulated Tarique Rahman on his political party, the BNP, which swept the Bangladesh parliamentary elections. 

He added that this win reflects the trust of Bangladesh’s citizens in his leadership.

Modi also said India will continue to support a democratic and progressive Bangladesh and looks forward to strengthening bilateral relations and advancing their development objectives.

Rahman Leads BNP to Election Win Months After Hasina Toppled

Led by Tarique Rehman, BNP won the most votes in Bangladesh's first election since the 2024 student uprising that led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government.

BNP Headed for Decisive Victory in Bangladesh Elections

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is moving ahead with a claimed victory, having already secured 177 seats in the ongoing 13th parliamentary vote count.

As of now, 237 constituencies are covered; however, counting is still in progress for the remaining 62 seats.

Meanwhile, according to the latest figures, Jamaat-e-Islami and its allies have secured 53 constituencies. 

About Tarique Rehman, Son of Former Bangladesh PM Khaleda Zia

Tariq Rehman is a senior politician from Bangladesh and is a leading figure of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). 

He comes from a political background, as he is the eldest son of the late Khaleda Zia, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh. 

Khaleda was the widow of former President Ziaur Rehman, the founder of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). 

She had been Prime Minister twice, from 1991 to 1996 and from 2001 to 2006. She also served as the chairperson of the latter political party.

Khaleda is credited with shaping Bangladesh's politics, making her an influential figure in the country's history despite facing health and legal challenges. 

Khaleda passed away on December 30, 2025, at the age of 80.

Tariq has played a key role in bringing BNP’s policies and strategy. Over the years, he has taken the initiative to connect with grassroots workers nationwide. 

BNP sees him as the best decision-maker for the party. Although he was not very active in politics for a long time, Tariqe became a guiding force for his party. 

Under his leadership, BNP has witnessed strength and voter support in recent elections. Tariq Rehman remains a prominent figure in Bangladeshi politics today.

Election Results To Be Out Soon

The Election Commission has not yet made any formal announcement about the election results. 

However, it is clear that BNP is nearing victory, having secured a majority of seats. 

Results in several seats are still being counted and are expected to be finalised in a few hours.
