Mukesh Choudhary Injury Comeback as CSK Pacer Eyes India A Tour After Back Injury
Mukesh Choudhary Ranji Trophy: Mukesh Choudhary didn't get many opportunities to bowl at Palam. In a recent Ranji Trophy Elite match, Services batted for 80 overs in the first innings and played with a lot of intent, though at a very slow rate of scoring. Maharashtra were looking for a breakthrough and as the afternoon progressed Mukesh was hoping the new ball would do the trick.
While fielding at cover Mukesh (left arm seamer) asked the captain Prithvi Shaw if they could go for the new ball. Shaw said yes and Mukesh then bowled an over before the spinners came back. That short spell was indicative of his focus on the team and the game. Maharashtra then bowled Services out and had a 106-run lead in the first innings.

Mukesh Choudhary Injury Comeback | Cricketer Makes a Strong Comeback
Mukesh bowled 13 overs in the first innings and took 1 wicket, didn't bowl in the second. Still, to see him at Palam was very reassuring. He looked fit, he looked strong and he looked like a left arm fast bowler. Since his first-class debut in 2017 he has played 24 first class matches, 26 List A matches and 44 T20s.
His career has been held up by injuries time and again. After a good performance in the Irani Cup he is now all set to head over to New Zealand with India A for the multi-day games. After all the ups and downs he is back in the selectors' plans. Mukesh told the media he feels great and is ready for New Zealand. He also said his physical and mental health are both good.
He's absolutely right in that he feels he can do it. His Irani Cup performance brought back the memory of what he can do when he's fit and it confirmed his place at this level. He says big games are a test of your ability and they show you can go on and do more.
He went on to say that after the confidence boost from the team's win, a bowler has to be able to perform in all sorts of situations. He had one or two loose spells, but he didn't in the slightest doubt his ability or his capacity to be at this level. The challenge after an injury isn't just physical either. It's about believing in yourself to be the player you were before.
Mukesh Choudhary Back Injury
Mukesh Choudhary Injury Comeback: Mukesh is very much aware of that feeling of uncertainty. His problems started in 2022 with a back injury following on from a side strain and a stress reaction. It took him nearly 18 months to recover and he had to rebuild his entire routine from the ground up.
He does sometimes feel that he can't bowl the way he used to, with back injuries being such a difficult thing to recover from. He always stuck to the fundamentals, he was always focused and he never took any shortcuts. He started off with very gentle releases and worked his way up to being able to bowl 10 overs with a full run-up.
There was no 'aha' moment where he just felt he was ready. It was a gradual thing, building up day by day until it just became natural to bowl. For a bowler who had started off so well, those interruptions were very frustrating. CSK's support in that period was vital to his recovery. Mukesh joined CSK as a net bowler in 2021 and was bought by them at the 2022 auction. He learnt from the guys there and saw what it actually takes to be at the top level.
Mukesh Choudhary Bowling Speed | Smart Advice from Dhoni
A lot of that learning came from MS Dhoni. Mukesh has spoken about Dhoni's advice to keep it simple, not to get under pressure and to just move on from mistakes. That was Dhoni's message in relation to bowling in the IPL but it was also his message to Mukesh in general. He would tell you to focus on what you need to work on prior to the next season and he had immense belief in Mukesh's ability.
Dhoni told him to return with better skills and better control, to stay physically fit and to work on his weak spots (particularly the notion that an't day doesn't have to be the beginning of a bad spell). Fast bowling is of course difficult. That advice stuck with him, especially as T20 cricket gives bowlers very little time to recover when batters are on the attack.
Mukesh says he picked up at CSK that a good performance doesn't make you complacent, and a bad one doesn't affect what comes next. Bowling long spells is all about patience, and it's a real test of the mind, as you go back to the same thing for hours on end. The Irani Cup five-for was more than just a good performance ahead of the New Zealand tour. It was a performance in the format he wants to play most.
Mukesh Choudhary Red-Ball Cricket
Mukesh Choudhary Injury Comeback: His primary aim is to play more red ball cricket. T20 is a short game so that's something he can always play. The India A tour will be another opportunity to get some experience in that format. It will also be a chance to build on the confidence he has already gained in the Irani Cup playing alongside the other fast bowler Akash Deep. He isn't really looking ahead to New Zealand at all. He just wants to get out there, show himself, play for the team and learn from it.
He's just as thoughtful when it comes to his aims for the season prior to the IPL. Having spent so much time on recovery, on fitness and on looking forward, he doesn't want to be too concerned about what's to come. He doesn't want to be so caught up in the future that he loses the present. All he wants is to enjoy the game. If he bowls well then that's a reflection of his fitness and he'll be able to get the right length.
He's not making any grand declarations about an India debut or making up for all the lost time. For the moment his focus is just that; to stay fit, keep bowling well and be in a position to take advantage when the opportunity arises.
