Sanju Samson Opens Up About His Partnership With Abhishek Sharma

Sanju Samson was named ‘Player of the Tournament’ for his major contribution in helping India win the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 trophy.

He recently opened up about his partnership with Abhishek Sharma. Let’s find out what's behind the partnership with his fellow batsman.

‘We are not Fire and Ice; Sanju Samson on his Partnership with Abhishek Sharma

Following the retirements of Chase Master Virat Kohli and Hitman Rohit Sharma from the shortest format, Samson and Abhishek Sharma stepped in as the new opening pair.

Speaking to the media, Samson explained the balance in their partnership: “We are not fire and ice; rather, we are fire and fire. Sometimes he takes charge, sometimes I do, which keeps our approach dynamic. This combination has worked for us since 2024. Besides our Kerala-Punjabi friendship, our roles naturally alternate at the crease to suit the situation.”

Further, Samson said that he and Abhishek never complicate things in the middle and keep their communication simple.

According to Samson, their on-field coordination is instinctive. For example, when Abhishek checked in about the ball’s pace, Samson assured him to trust his timing and play his shots naturally.

This simple and mutual understanding strengthens their partnership.

Samson also highlighted Abhishek's composure and willingness to take risks, traits that complement Samson's approach and form the basis of their strong partnership, both professionally and personally.

Overcame Difficulties Before Winning The T20 World Cup 2026 Title

Revealing more about his partnership with Abhishek, Samson said both had faced challenges before contributing to India’s historic win in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Due to his bad form, he was excluded from the playing XI before the tournament. However, the 31-year-old returned to the team in the Super 8 stage and excelled, scoring 97, 89, and 89 in India’s final three matches.

Because of his standout performance, he was honoured with the ‘Player of the Tournament’ award. Abhishek, who began with three consecutive ducks in the tournament, also proved his prowess as a top T20 batsman.
