Govt Bans 5 OTT Platforms for Alleged Obscene Content
On Tuesday, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) banned 5 online streaming platforms after it pointed out obscene content.
According to government sources, it even released the list of blocked OTT platforms following due process.
This followed after MIB received multiple complaints about these 18+ OTT platforms.
OTT Platform Ban: 5 Platforms That the MIB Has Blocked
According to the MIB's list of banned OTT platforms released to the press, the list includes MoodXVIP, Koyal Playpro, Digi Movieplex, Feel, and Jugnu.
These platforms have been blocked for their alleged role in hosting obscene content.
The step is taken in accordance with the IT Act and the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.
This has been implemented to handle unlawful and harmful content in the digital realm.
Previous Cases of OTT Ban By MIB
The recent MIB ban on five OTT platforms is not new. According to a media source, the Ministry previously banned 25 OTT platforms in July 2025.
The reason was the same: vulgarity and pornographic material.
It all happened after dialogue with several government departments and civil society stakeholders.
Among the blocked apps during that time were Ullu, ALTT, Big Shots App, NeonX VIP, and Desiflix.
They got banned for violating provisions of the Indian law.
OTT Platforms Given Prior Warnings, Requested To Comply With Laws
Two years ago, in September, these 25 OTT platforms were given prior warning by MIB. In 2025, in February, the Ministry issued an advisory requiring OTT platforms to comply with the law.
According to MIB sources, the content displayed on these platforms showed graphic sexual content, long-running nude scenes, and pornographic materials.
The Ministry pointed out that there was hardly any punchy storyline, theme, or message in a social context. In some sexual situations, it even showed family involvement.
Govt Alleges Banned OTT Platforms Restarted via New Domains
The government has stated that the five OTT platforms blocked in March 2024 are now operating under new domains.
Despite Ullu removing 100 web series, it is alleged that they were either temporarily removed or edited and were later uploaded again in the original, uncut form.
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) raised objections over Ullu and ALTT's alleged violations in July and August 2024.
Five OTT Platforms Face Backlash
Currently, the five OTT platforms blocked by MIB are facing backlash, as no one has released any statement yet.
Following the procedure, the government has directed internet service providers to remove access to OTT platforms under the IT Rules 2021 and existing laws on obscenity.
According to PTI (Press Trust of India), these rules emphasise the enforcement of ethical journalistic practices across digital platforms, safeguarding national interests, and upholding public decency.
