What Changed Kerala to Keralam? Cabinet's Bold Move

Kerala will soon be known as Keralam, as the Union Cabinet, under the leadership of PM Modi, has approved the name change.

After this approval, the President of India will consider the bill, called the Kerala Bill, 2026, to be presented to the State Legislative Assembly of Kerala for its views under Article 3 of the Constitution of India.

Kerala to Keralam

After considering the views received, the Government of India will take further action and seek the President of India's recommendation to introduce the bill in Parliament to alter Kerala’s name to Keralam.

The move to change Kerala's name has come ahead of the state assembly elections, although the Election Commission of India has not announced the poll dates yet.

Kerala Name Changed to Keralam

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan introduced the proposal to change Kerala's name in all official languages in 2023 and 2024.

The proposal has been introduced twice by the assembly. After the initial approval, the Union Home Ministry demanded a few more technical modifications, and the proposal got passed again.

Through this move, the Kerala government seeks to have the central government officially change the state’s current name to Keralam under Article 3 of the Constitution of India.

Keralam Meaning

According to the Assembly, Keralam is the Malayalam name. It further pointed out that the formation of the states was based on language. On November 1, 1956, a day celebrated as Kerala Piravi Day.

Furthermore, the assembly also noted that it demanded a single state for Malayalam-speaking people, which dates back to the freedom movement.

However, the Constitution of India still mentions the state as ‘Kerala. Now, again, the assembly wants it changed as soon as possible.

The other places whose names have changed include Ahmedabad to Amravati, Hyderabad to Bhagyanagar, and Aurangabad to Sambhajinagar. Gurgaon was also named Gurugram to honour Guru Dronacharya, the teacher of the Kuru clan from the epic Mahabharata.
