How Mexico Tracked Down El Mencho Through His Girlfriend
Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, also known as El Mencho, was the most-wanted drug lord in Mexico.
He died after sustaining injuries during a Mexican military operation.
According to authorities, the action triggered violent cartel attacks in different states.
Mexico Violence: Death of Most Wanted Drug Lord El Mencho
According to Mexico Cartel News, officials said the intelligence gathered information about the drug lord El Mencho by tracking his girlfriend’s moves.
This helped security forces track the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, who was near the mountain town of Tpalpa, Jalisco.
During the clash, Mencho got severely injured in a clash with troops and died while being taken to a medical facility along with two bodyguards.
How Authorities Find Mexico Drug Cartel Lord
According to Defence Minister Ricardo Trevilla, investigators recognised a trusted associate, who had connections with one of the Osegueras’ partners.
She was Osequera or Mencho’s girlfriend, whom they followed to a rural compound to track her movements.
After she left, officials had the belief that the cartel lord was inside under tight security, and quickly carried out the operation thereafter.
The next day, security forces covered the property. The gunmen loyal to Osequera opened fire and fled with him to a nearby forest.
However, later on, troops caught them seriously injured with other close member groups.
Those injured were taken out by helicopter, but unfortunately did not survive on the way, according to Trevilla during a government briefing.
Mexican Forces Led Raid, US Role Limited To Intelligence
While Mexican forces carried out the raid with their well-planned strategy, the United States Intelligence also took a lion’s share of the credit for tracking the hideout’s location.
But Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum clearly stated that there would be no US troops involved in this operation.
Violence in Mexico Within Hours of Raid
Within hours of the raid, the violence in Mexico broke out with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) carrying out attacks on different regions.
It followed with roads blocked, vehicles being set on fire, damaging shops, and opening fire at security forces.
Security minister Omar Garcia Harfuch said around 25 National Guard personnel lost their lives in Jalisco in the attacks on Sunday.
During the violence, 30 cartel members are also suspected of having been killed. Authorities tried their best to monitor the situation and arrested a dozen people across several states.
According to officials, senior CJNG leaders encouraged violence to undermine the government’s response.
Other than the death of Mexico’s most-wanted drug lord, Mencho, his alleged financial head, El Tuli, was also killed in a separate encounter with the army.
‘Situation Getting Calmer Now’, says President Claudia Sheinbaum
For Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, the situation has been under control after the initial shock.
She added that the most important thing now is to ensure peace and security for people in Mexico.
Rise of CJNG Under the Leadership of El Mencho
Under the leadership of El Mencho, CJNG rose to become Mexico’s most powerful criminal group, with networks extending far beyond the country.
They played a key role in smuggling fentanyl and other drugs into the United States.
