Sholay: The Final Cut Gets 4K Re-Release with Original Ending

Sholay, the cult classic film from 1975, is all set to hit the screen soon. The movie is re-releasing on December 12, 2025, in 4K restoration with its original ending.

The intent behind the re-release of this movie, titled Sholay - The Final Cut, is to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ramesh Sippy and his contribution to Indian cinema.

Restoring Sholay: Ramesh Sippy’s Timeless Masterpiece

Sholay is one of the cult masterpieces in Indian cinema. Released in 1975, the movie is making a comeback in a 4k restoration, and will once again bind its viewers as it did before.

The popular characters of this movie, Veeru, Jai, Basanti, Thakur, and Gabbar, will let you revisit that golden era. Apart from a compelling storyline, its dialogues are still very famous in different forms.

If you have watched this movie, you must be familiar with its climax scene when Thakur is about to kill the antagonist Gabbar with his spiked shoes, but is stopped and reminded of his legacy of being a law-abiding officer by police inspector Kuldeep.

Well, this was the softer version that we all know, but originally, in the climax part, Gabbar (Amjad Khan) gets killed by Thakur (Sanjeev Kapoor) with his spiked shoes. However, it was changed due to the Censor Board’s objection to violence.

The final cut re-release of Sholay is released by Film Heritage Foundation on their official X handle, captioned "The wait is finally over!!

Release of Sholay 4k Version on TIFF

Before its slated release this December, the movie screening has already taken place at the 50th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

Ramesh Sippy's Sholay was an action thriller released in 1975 on 15th August. Kudos to iconic duo Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, who are behind its gripping storyline.

The soundtrack was composed by R.D. Burman, and the film boasted a stellar ensemble cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Jaya Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, Amjad Khan, and Asrani in key roles.
