Trump Hints at New Tariffs on Russian Oil, Says PM Modi Knew He Was Unhappy

On Monday, US President Donald Trump once again hinted at an increase in existing tariffs on Indian imports if New Delhi doesn’t take the Russian oil issue seriously.

While addressing reporters, he referred to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a ‘good guy’ and said he was aware of his unhappiness over this matter.

Trump was heard saying it was essential to make him happy. We could quickly apply tariffs on India.

Let's hear what he said.

Trump Tariffs on Russian Oil

While briefing Reuters, US President Donald Trump once again talked about Russian oil imports by India.

His administration has always expressed disagreement over it for a long time. This was the reason it doubled tariffs to 50% in August 2025.

According to him, if India doesn’t cooperate with the United States over the Russian oil issue, then it will face a rise in tariffs.

Amid the Venezuela crisis, Trump threatens New Tariffs on India Over Oil

Trump spoke about his views while discussing the United States' next move post the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro.

The main reason behind the current US attack on Venezuela is said to be the oil. The latest tariff hike on India came during the ongoing trade negotiations.

What Trump said about PM Modi

Trump’s recent remarks follow his claims on PM Modi's assurance of stopping Russian oil imports.

The US President said this in October, weeks after the imposition of 50% tariffs on India. However, India has refuted such claims of his conversations with PM Modi.

Even as the Trump administration has continued to express its dissatisfaction with India's Russian oil purchases, India has followed its own policies on prioritising market prices and Indian consumer needs.

His recent remarks can trigger a new problem in India-U.S. relations. However, after the imposition of tariffs, things have briefly turned positive, with Trump acknowledging his friendship with Modi, showing the strong bond between the two nations.

The Indian Prime Minister has also lauded Trump's perspective on their relationship.

How Russian Oil Affects India

Russia is India's major oil supplier. Trump officials have even accused the country of misusing the oil sales to fund the Ukraine war.

They further claimed India is generating massive gains with the reselling of this oil. The high tariffs imposed by Trump's government on India were a way to pressure Putin to put an end to the Ukraine war.
