Government Expands LPG Sources as Gas Cylinder Shortage Rises
India has decided to diversify its LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) sources, commonly known as cooking gas, to ensure a stable supply. Read on to learn more about this issue.
LPG Gas Cylinder Shortage
Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced in parliament that India will import LPG from countries such as Algeria, the United States, Canada, Russia, and Norway, expanding beyond its traditional suppliers in the Gulf region.
Previously, the Gulf nations supplied about 60% of India’s LPG imports, including Kuwait, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar.
Domestic production met the remaining 40%. Now, the government has expanded the supply network to minimise dependency on a single region.
By sourcing LPG from several countries, India aims to protect itself against supply disruptions and ensure householders do not face cooking gas shortages for daily use.
LPG Shortage in India: Measures Taken by the Indian Government
The government took these measures in response to the current global energy crisis triggered by tensions in West Asia. According to Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, the world is currently facing uncertainty in the modern energy sector.
The problem started after the conflict between Iran, Israel, and the United States. This conflict affected the shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz.
This route is essential to global energy trade, as 20% of the world’s crude oil, LPG, and natural gas is transported through it.m
Gas Cylinder Shortage in India: Oil Supply Safe in India, Says Petroleum Minister
The disruption has been ongoing for two weeks, which is an alarming situation in the context of global fuel supply.
Despite the situation, the Petroleum Minister has assured the parliament that India’s crude oil will remain safe.
He stated that the country has already saved the maximum amount of crude oil compared to what normally passes through the Strait of Hormuz.
Previously, around 40% of India’s crude oil was transported via this route, but India has since shifted most of its sourcing to other regions.
Currently, India receives about 70% of its crude oil imports through routes that bypass the Strait of Hormuz, up from about 55% before the dispute began.
It imports crude oil from nearly 40 nations. That is a remarkable rise from just 27 in 2006-2007.
This wide network of suppliers gives the country major flexibility during a crisis. Indian oil refineries are currently operating at very high capacity utilisation, with some exceeding 100%.
Indian Government Ensures Sufficient Supply
The government has ensured that the country has a sufficient supply of kerosene, aviation turbine fuel (ATF), diesel, and petrol.
Officials from the petroleum ministry have also confirmed that fuel is available at all retail outlets across India.
As of September 2025, the country features 99,000 fuel stations. Among these are more than 28,000 in rural areas, and none are out of fuel.
India produces about 90 million metric standard cubic metres of natural gas per day (MMSCMD), which meets less than half of its daily use of 189 MMSCMD.
Reason Behind the LPG Cylinder Crisis
Disturbances at a leading processing facility in Qatar have affected some imports from Gulf nations. To resolve this situation, the government set up a system that prioritises gas supply.
Through this system, householders will receive piped gas, and vehicles will receive compressed natural gas (CNG) with an uninterrupted supply.
Industrial users will now receive around 80% of their normal gas supply. Fertiliser plants will receive 70% to support farming needs.
According to the latest LPG price news, LPG production has surged by 28% to keep the cooking gas supply stable for more than 33 crore households.
While hospitals will be given priority, the government will monitor commercial LPG sales to prevent hoarding.
