Harish Rana, 31, has been in a vegetative state since 2013, after he suffered multiple head injuries from falling from a fourth-floor balcony while studying BTech at Punjab University.

For many years, he had survived through artificial nutrition and occasional oxygen support.

Supreme Court of India Allows Passive Euthanasia for Rana

Witnessing the pitiable condition of Harish Rana, the Supreme Court of India allowed passive euthanasia in his case. The court asked doctors to withdraw life support in a respectful and careful way.

Rana Moved To AIIMS for Treatment

Harish Rana, AIIMS: Harish Rana was taken from his home in Ghaziabad and shifted to the palliative care unit at AIIMS Delhi on March 14.

His treatment was being undergone at the Dr BR Ambedkar Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital.

Doctor Seema, who led the team of doctors, managed the process. This was the rarest of cases in India.

The team involved in his treatment included experts from palliative care, neurosurgery, psychiatry, and anaesthesia. They looked after everything and ensured it was managed properly.

Artificial Nutrition Stopped Per the Court’s Direction

While closely monitoring his treatment, doctors adhered to medical guidelines and discontinued artificial nutrition, per the court’s direction.

This case is being seen as an important moment in India’s approach to end-of-life care, with a focus on dignity, ethics, and legal safeguards.
