Putin Praises Narendra Modi Amid Ongoing Trade Tension With US

Amid ongoing tariff tension with the United States, Russian President Vladimir Putin has lauded Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a leader with a balanced and wise approach.
Putin has warned the US to stop pressuring India over oil imports from Russia. Recently, a 50 per cent tariff was imposed by US President Donald Trump on India, with half of the tariff applied to oil trading with Russia.
Putin Comes In Support of Narendra Modi
While briefing at the Valdei Discussion Group, Russian President Vladimir Putin came in support of Narendra Modi, lauding him for his excellent leadership in adopting a national-centric approach.
He further asserted that it would be intolerant for New Delhi to face humiliation in front of anyone. Moreover, it is capable of managing the losses caused by hefty tariffs under Trump's administration. Putin further expressed his firm belief to the Indian Prime Minister that he won't bend under tariff pressure.
What if India gives up on Russian energy
Putin also stressed the point that even if India gives up on Russian energy, it would trigger sanctions, resulting in a loss of $9-10 billion. Hence, according to him, there is no point in refusing it if it carries domestic political costs.
He mentioned the announcement made fifteen years ago, stating the privileged strategic partnership between India and Russia. According to him, Narendra Modi is a nation-centric leader who thinks about the development of his country.
Reducing trade disparity
The Russian President did not just stop at highlighting cooperation with India, but also outlined plans to address the trade imbalance between the two nations, caused by New Delhi's high import of crude.
According to Putin, Russia will increase its purchase of agricultural products from India and will take further steps to boost trade in pharmaceuticals and medicinal goods.
Display of Warm Greeting Between Two National Leaders
His latest remarks on PM Modi reflect the warm rapport between the two leaders, first highlighted during the SCO Summit in China.
The images of them sharing a hug and a car ride showcased the strong cooperation between Russia and India.
Trump’s switching stance on India
Following this key meeting, Donald Trump also shifted his stance towards India, calling Modi a great Prime Minister, with whom he shares a good rapport.
The Indian PM appreciated this gesture, acknowledging his efforts in strengthening India-US ties.
However, the tone of the US President again shifted with the evidence of his remark at the United Nations General Assembly. He accused India and China of financing the Ukraine war to import Russian oil.
