According to an update by the Sydney Morning Herald, Naveed Akram, the slayer gunman involved in the deadly shootout incident at Bondi Beach, Sydney, called his mother just hours before the attack.

As police surrounded her home in Bonnyrigg in Sydney’s west, Verena, the mother of the Sydney shooter, told the news outlet that his son had informed her on Sunday morning about his weekend trip to Jervis Bay with his father, Sajid Akram.

She recalled him ringing her and saying ‘’ Mum, I just went for a swim. I went scuba diving. We're going ... to eat now, and then this morning, and we're going to stay home now because it's very hot".

However, she had no clue about what the father-son duo were planning to do. And it happened when both opened fire on people during the Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach.

They killed around 15 people, which also included a 10-year-old child. The attacks severely injured others.

During the shootout operation, police killed 50-year-old Sajid Akram and wounded his son, Naveed, 24 and took him into custody later.

Australian PM Anthony Albanese Condemns Attack

Condemning the attack of the Sydney shooter, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called it an ‘Act of anti-semitism terrorism’.

He said, "What we saw yesterday was an act of pure evil, an act of antisemitism, an act of terrorism on our shores."

Beach Boardwalk Targeted in Shooting During Jewish Festival

At the time when the shooting incident took place, there were around 1000 people who gathered at the beach to celebrate the eight-day Jewish festival.

According to officials, both father and son targeted the raised boardwalk area near swimmers, using long-range firearms.

They opened fire recklessly for at least 10 minutes until police officials entered the scene.

It’s hard for her to believe that her son is involved in such a violent act. She says that Naveed never had a firearm and is not an outgoing person.

He does not socialise with friends, never drinks, nor smokes, and doesn't even visit the wrong places. According to her, after working, he returns home and does exercise; that’s it.

Lost a Bricklaying Job and was Unemployed for Two Months

The mother of the accused further added that her son lost the bricklaying job and remained unemployed for two months.

It all happened when the company he was working for became bankrupt, and he started looking for a new job.

Further praising her son, she says Naveed is such a good boy that any mother would wish to have a son like him.

Officials Seek Motive Behind Attack as Australia Heightens Religious Site Security

The motive behind the attack on the people at Bondi Beach in Australia is, however, unknown to officials right now.

Authorities are investigating the matter to determine the exact reason. The attack has prompted heightened nationwide security around religious sites.
