Commonwealth Games 2026 Day 8: India enjoyed another productive day at the Commonwealth Games as Lovepreet Singh won silver in the men's weightlifting 110+kg category and Seema Kaliramna claimed bronze in the women's discus throw.

Neeraj Chopra, Rohit Yadav, and Yashvir Singh qualified for the men's javelin throw final, while Tejaswin Shankar remained in medal contention in the decathlon.

India's lawn bowls pair of Navneet Singh and Dinesh Kumar also continued their unbeaten run.

However, there were disappointments in athletics as Parul Chaudhary, Animesh Kujur, and Vishal TK failed to reach the finals, while India's cyclists struggled to make an impact.

Lovepreet silver medal Commonwealth Games 2026: Lovepreet produced the best performance of his campaign, setting a Commonwealth Games record of 176kg in the snatch and finishing with a total lift of 388kg (176kg + 212kg).

He missed the gold medal by just one kilogram, finishing behind New Zealand's David Andrew Liti, who totalled 389kg.

Lovepreet held a 10kg lead after the snatch, but Liti responded with a Games record 223kg clean and jerk. The Indian attempted 217kg in his final lift to reclaim the lead but could not complete it.

Commonwealth Games 2026 Day 8: The silver marked an improvement over Lovepreet's bronze medal at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games and concluded India's weightlifting campaign with eight medals—one gold, six silvers, and one bronze.

In the women's +86kg event, 18-year-old Martina Devi recovered from two failed snatch attempts to successfully lift 105kg on her final try.

She finished with a total of 245kg (105kg + 140kg) and narrowly missed fourth place after unsuccessful clean and jerk attempts at 144kg and 146kg.

Seema bronze medal Commonwealth Games 2026: India's athletics team added another medal as Seema Kaliramna secured bronze in the women's discus throw with a best effort of 58.65m.

Despite committing three fouls during the competition, her third-round throw was enough to keep her on the podium.

Returning to competition after motherhood and while pursuing a PhD, Seema held on to third place as Cameroon's Monie Nora Atim failed to improve in her final attempt.

India's Nidhi Rani finished fourth with a best throw of 55.67m. Jamaica's Samantha Hall won gold with 61.66m, while Canada's Julia Tunks took silver with 60.67m.

Commonwealth Games 2026 Day 8: India also enjoyed success in the men's triple jump qualifiers. National record holder Praveen Chithravel qualified second with a best jump of 16.41m, while Selva Prabhu finished third with 16.26m to book his place in the final.

In the men's decathlon, Tejaswin Shankar ended the opening day in second place with 4,339 points after five events, trailing Canada's Damian Warner by only 14 points.

Shankar impressed in the high jump, clearing 2.15m for 944 points, and also excelled in the long jump with 7.82m, earning 1,015 points to remain firmly in the medal race.

India's hopes of reaching more track finals ended after Animesh Kujur and Vishal TK were eliminated in the semifinals.

Kujur finished sixth in the men's 200m semifinal in 20.65 seconds, well below his national record of 20.32 seconds, while Vishal also placed sixth in the men's 400m semifinal with a time of 46.33 seconds.

Parul Chaudhary's difficult campaign continued as she finished 13th in the women's 5,000m final.

In lawn bowls, Navneet Singh and Dinesh Kumar registered their third consecutive victory in the men's pairs event after defeating Botswana in a tie-break.

The Indian duo comfortably won the opening set 9-2 before Botswana levelled the contest by taking the second set 4-3.

Navneet and Dinesh stayed composed in the tie-break to seal victory and strengthen their chances of reaching the knockout stage.

The pair now have three wins from three matches in Section B, where they compete against England, Namibia, the Falkland Islands, the Cook Islands, and Botswana.

Neeraj Chopra Advances to Javelin Final; Nayanmoni Saikia Suffers Defeat

Commonwealth Games 2026 Day 8: In another lawn bowls event, Nayanmoni Saikia lost 0.5-1.5 to Malaysia's Emma Firyana Saroji in the women's singles Section C match.

India also received encouraging news in the men's javelin throw qualifiers, as Neeraj Chopra, Rohit Yadav, and Yashvir Singh all advanced to the final despite difficult, windy conditions.

No athlete managed to achieve the automatic qualifying distance, with Chopra advancing in fifth place through a best throw of 79.61m.

Rohit finished ninth with 78.37m, while Yashvir secured the final qualifying spot in 10th with 78.36m.

India Miss Shot Put Podium Despite Two Finalists; Cyclists Eliminated

India's hopes of winning a first Commonwealth Games medal in the men's shot put were dashed despite having two finalists.

Asian Games champion Tajinderpal Singh Toor finished fifth with a best throw of 20.27m, while Samardeep Singh Gill placed seventh after recording 20.03m.

Nigeria's Chukwuebuka Enekwechi claimed gold with a throw of 21.07m, edging New Zealand's Tom Walsh.

India's cyclists also endured a disappointing day. Teenage para-cyclist Lisha Das was eliminated in the qualification round of the women's C4-C5 4,000m individual pursuit after finishing sixth with a time of 6:58.000.

The men's team sprint trio of Rojit Singh, David Beckham, and Ronaldo Singh also failed to advance, finishing seventh and last in qualification with a time of 46.396 seconds.
