CWG 2026 Opening Ceremony: Olympic medalists Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain led the Indian team into the opening ceremony of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. King Charles III officially opened the Games on Wednesday.

Mirabai and Lovlina carried the Indian flag into the OVO Hydro, receiving loud cheers from the crowd.

The rest of India's 126-member team joined them during the Parade of Nations. The Indian team received one of the biggest ovations of the evening as the 11-day event began in Scotland.

CWG 2026 Opening Ceremony: 3,000 Athletes, 74 Nations: A Compact Commonwealth Games Begins

Commonwealth Games 2026: The opening ceremony started the 33rd Commonwealth Games, bringing together over 3,000 athletes from 74 countries and territories.

The competition runs until August 2 and features 10 sports at four venues. This is the smallest edition of the Games in more than 30 years.

Six sports also include para events, highlighting the Commonwealth Games' focus on inclusivity.

King Charles III Declares Commonwealth Games Open

CWG 2026 Opening Ceremony: King Charles III, joined by Queen Camilla, opened the Games as Head of the Commonwealth.

He read the message he placed inside the King's Baton during Commonwealth Day at Buckingham Palace in March 2025 before declaring the Games open.

Before the ceremony, King Charles met baton bearers from Commonwealth nations at a reception with Scottish First Minister John Swinney, the Duke of Edinburgh, and other dignitaries.

In his speech to athletes and officials, the King praised the spirit of the Commonwealth.

He said that watching the Batons arrive in Scotland, carried by inspiring athletes and para-athletes, showed that the Commonwealth is a unique and extraordinary family of nations.

At the Games, they celebrated the dedication and talent of every athlete and team.

He added that the athletes' perseverance inspired people across the Commonwealth and that everyone looked forward to seeing their achievements in the coming days.

CWG 2026 Opening Ceremony: The King also mentioned the King's Baton Relay Clean Oceans Plastic Campaign, a year-long effort that removed over one million pieces of plastic from waterways in Commonwealth countries.

He encouraged everyone to work together for a better future for families, each other, and the planet, united by a shared love for sport and culture.

Before the ceremony, spectators enjoyed entertainment from mascot Finnie. In a hilarious surprise appearance, Scottish wrestler Grado showed up dressed as a giant teacake.

The celebrations continued with a Doctor Who-themed sequence, where the TARDIS travelled across Scotland before appearing inside the Hydro.

Cycling legend Sir Chris Hoy and actor Greg McHugh stepped out of the famous time machine to loud applause.

126-Member Indian Contingent: Glasgow Cuts Costs by 60% as Commonwealth Games Return to Scotland

CWG 2026 Opening Ceremony: Glasgow hosted the Games after Victoria, Australia, withdrew because of rising costs.

The city, which also hosted the 2014 Commonwealth Games, managed the event using only existing venues and infrastructure.

The Games were held on a budget of about £160 million, nearly 60 per cent less than the Birmingham 2022 edition.

India sent a 126-member team to Glasgow, competing in eight able-bodied sports and five para sports.

Mirabai Chanu Leads India at CWG 2026

CWG 2026 Opening Ceremony: Mirabai, who won silver at the Tokyo Olympics, and Lovlina, the Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist in boxing, were chosen as India's flag-bearers for the opening.

India's campaign begins on Thursday, with medal events in several sports.

However, the country's medal count may be lower this year because traditional strong sports such as shooting, wrestling, badminton, hockey, and cricket are not included in the program.

India Set to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad Following Historic 61-Medal Haul

India finished fourth at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games with 61 medals, including 22 gold.

The country will host the next Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad in 2030, when the event returns as a full-scale Games with 17 sports.
