Mirabai Chanu Scripts History, Bags India's First CWG 2026 Gold

Besides Jadumani entering the quarterfinal after defeating Pakistani boxer Rahman, Mirabai Chanu also contributed to India's win by clinching India’s first CWG 2026 gold.

Mirabai Chanu proved her strength once more by winning gold. The Indian weightlifter earned her third consecutive Commonwealth Games title and secured India’s first gold medal of the 2026 Games on Sunday, July 26. She lifted a total of 190kg—85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk.

With this win, the 31-year-old became the second Indian weightlifter to medal on Sunday, joining Chanambam Rishikanta Singh.

She set new Games and Commonwealth records in the snatch with her 85kg lift, then lifted 105kg in the clean and jerk to set another Games record and claim her fourth Commonwealth Games medal.

While others battled for podium spots, Mirabai’s steady performance in both lifts secured her the gold.

Before the event, she said her main focus was the Asian Games, which are two months away, so she planned to avoid risks in Glasgow.

She was the last to compete. Her first snatch attempt was not perfect, but she stayed calm and smiled as she left the stage.

On her second try, she lifted 82kg, setting a new Games record and exciting the crowd. She still had more to show.

For her third attempt, the weight increased to 85kg. Mirabai lifted it smoothly, breaking both the Games and Commonwealth records.

The previous Games record in the 48kg category was 79kg, which she surpassed easily.

She also broke her own Commonwealth record of 84kg set in Ahmedabad last year. Later, Nigeria’s Ruth Nyong lifted 93kg, so an Indian lift of 93kg or more would almost guarantee the gold.

Mirabai’s first clean and jerk attempt did not succeed, but she quickly regrouped and returned to the platform, looking determined.

This time, Mirabai looked completely focused. She shouted before approaching the bar, energising the Indian fans in the arena.

She completed the clean confidently, steadied herself, and lifted the bar overhead with ease.

She held the position perfectly and received three white lights from the judges as the crowd cheered. Her trademark smile soon returned.

Her Bigger Goal: winning a medal at the Asian Games, which is one of the few major achievements she still wants in her career.

She managed her lifts in Glasgow carefully so she would be ready for the Asian Games in September.

She explained that she would not give her maximum effort at the Commonwealth Games because her main focus is the upcoming Asian Games.

She said her performance in Glasgow was part of her preparation for that event. With her strong showing on Sunday, Mirabai seems well on track to succeed at the Asian Games.
