Jamaica's Romaine Beckford secured gold, even though both athletes reached the same height.

Beckford managed to clear 2.25 meters on his first attempt, while Kushare needed all three attempts before finally clearing the bar in his final attempt.

Neither athlete cleared 2.28 meters. England's Kimani Jack took bronze by clearing 2.20 meters.

Indian high jumper Sarvesh Kushare had been consistent up to the critical height. He cleared 2.05 meters, 2.10 meters, 2.15 meters, and 2.20 meters on his first attempt before facing a challenge at 2.25 meters.

This silver medal brings India closer to its best performance in the event.

Tejaswin Shankar previously won bronze at Birmingham 2022, becoming India's first Commonwealth Games medallist in men's high jump.

Four years later, Kushare has now become the country's first silver medallist.

Commonwealth Games 2026: The distance between Kushare and Commonwealth history is much greater than the 2.25 meters he cleared in Glasgow.

Born on June 17, 1995, Kushare hails from Devargaon, a small village in Maharashtra's Nashik district.

His father, Anil Kushare, an onion farmer, initially wanted his son to pursue civil engineering.

Kushare chose high jump instead, despite lacking access to proper facilities for the sport.

His school's physical education teacher, Raosaheb Jadhav, recognised his talent and introduced him to high jumping.

There was no professional landing mat, so Jadhav, Kushare's father, and others made one using corn husks, agricultural waste, cotton, and discarded clothes.

It was in this makeshift pit that Kushare first learned to jump. He initially used the scissors technique and was hesitant to try the Fosbury Flop due to the risks without a proper landing mat.

Over time, with Jadhav's guidance, he gradually transitioned to the Fosbury Flop.

Glasgow Commonwealth Games: How the Indian Army Fueled Kushare’s High Jump Success

A major turning point came in 2016 when Kushare joined the Indian Army after failing to gain entry earlier.

It helped him train professionally with better coaching and resources.

His progress was steady rather than sudden. Kushare won the National Open title in 2018, became the South Asian Games champion in 2019, and cleared 2.27 meters to win the National Games in 2022.

He then took silver at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships with a height of 2.26 meters before narrowly missing an Asian Games medal, finishing fourth with the same height.

Paris 2024 Became Another Milestone for Kushare

The Paris 2024 Olympics marked another milestone when Kushare became the first Indian men's high jumper to compete at the Olympics.

His best effort was 2.15 meters, and it was only the first step in his journey.

Kushare reached an important milestone at the 2025 World Championships by qualifying for the men's high jump final.

He cleared a personal best of 2.28 meters in the final and finished joint-sixth among the world's top athletes.

Kushare Clears 2.31m to Smash Tejaswin Shankar's High Jump Record

In June, he cleared 2.31 meters at the National Inter-State Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar, breaking Tejaswin Shankar's eight-year-old national record of 2.29 meters and becoming the first Indian to cross the 2.30-meter mark.

This height had long been a target for Kushare. After a 14-step approach and his final attempt, he cleared 2.31 meters before trying 2.35 meters.

Kushare Joins Elite Indian Club With Monaco Diamond League Podium

Just over two weeks before the Commonwealth Games, Kushare finished third on his Diamond League debut in Monaco, clearing 2.26 meters.

This result made him only the fourth Indian athlete, after Vikas Gowda, Neeraj Chopra, and Murali Sreeshankar, to achieve a top-three finish in a Diamond League meeting.

Now comes Commonwealth silver. For an athlete who began his journey in a village in Nashik with a homemade landing pit, the journey is extraordinary: Olympic pioneer, World Championships finalist, national record holder, Diamond League podium finisher, and now India's best-ever Commonwealth Games men's high jump medallist.

Perhaps the most remarkable part is when it happened. At 31, Kushare continues to move forward in his career. He is achieving even more than before.
