Kangana Ranaut Political Career
Mandi MP Kangana Ranaut contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as a BJP candidate and won the Mandi seat, defeating Congress’s Vikramaditya Singh by 74,755 votes.
The day after winning, Kangana was slapped by a CISF officer at Chandigarh airport. She made a video to let her fans know she was okay.
Kangana is well known for her roles in Bollywood films. Her latest movie was Emergency.
Variety reports that she will soon make her Hollywood debut in the horror film Blessed Be The Evil, produced by Lionsgate Movies in the US.
She will star with Tyler Posey from Teen Wolf and Scarlet Rose Stallone. Filming is expected to start later this year in New York.
The Outsider Who Took Over Bollywood
About ten years ago, Kangana Ranaut made her acting debut in Gangster. At the time, few critics or movie fans could have predicted how fast she would become famous.
On Monday, Ranaut won her third National Award, and her second in a row, for Best Actress in Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015).
This is impressive for someone who has worked in the Hindi film industry for less than ten years.
In an industry that usually prefers star kids and beauty pageant winners, she stood out by proving her talent. She became popular and started earning big.
In the 2014 Forbes India Celebrity 100 List, she was ranked 64th with earnings of Rs 11.98 crore and a fame rank of 67. By 2015, her earnings had increased to Rs 18.63 crore.
She moved up 24 spots to reach rank 43, and her fame score also improved to 57. As a teenager with no famous family or guaranteed future, Ranaut left her small town in Himachal Pradesh and moved to Mumbai around 2000 to become an actor. Later, she revealed that her family did not want a girl child.
Her struggles as an outsider became even harder. In her early days in Mumbai, she says she was physically abused by a man who was the same age as her father.
Even though she showed great promise in early films like Gangster, Woh Lamhe, Life in a Metro, and Fashion (which won her the National Award for Best Supporting Actress), she did not get the respect she deserved in an industry that mostly supports its own.
She was made fun of for her accent, her English, her fashion sense, and for being different from some of the foreign-educated Bollywood stars.
Many people believed her intense roles on screen showed her real personality. The industry was not ready to accept a woman who wanted to break stereotypes. Still, Ranaut learned how to deal with difficult situations.
She worked on her weaknesses and put in a lot of effort to improve, overcoming many challenges.
Now, she is invited to speak at international events and is praised for her public speaking. She is also seen as a global fashion icon, with top brands wanting her as their ambassador.
Her memorable performances, especially in Queen (2014), which won her a National Award for Best Actress last year, led people to call her a game changer.
Ranaut was praised for taking on complex roles and playing them with confidence. She found success even without working with the top Khans.
As she received more endorsements, she stayed true to her values. For example, she turned down a big offer to be the face of a fairness cream.
She has also clearly said that she will not do item numbers. The success of Tanu Weds Manu Returns the next year, which earned Rs 150 crore at the box office, meant the industry could no longer ignore her.
Audiences began going to theatres just because of her reputation as a strong actor. She kept pushing herself and took on roles that many other actresses avoided.
Still, something about Ranaut makes many people in the industry uncomfortable. It might be her honesty, her claim to be the highest-paid actress, her desire to live life on her own terms, or her rebellious nature.
She openly criticized popular award shows and refused to attend them. Because of this, her strong performance in Tanu Weds Manu Returns was ignored at most award ceremonies.
Her willingness to challenge a superstar recently led him to call her someone with Asperger’s syndrome. The legal fight between them may push her even further away from some people in the industry.
For now, Ranaut does not seem worried. The National Award came at the right time for her.
Overall, she proved her worth in being a self-made star who never reclined on shoulders of Bollywood biggies. Her indomitable will and confidence made her establish herself.
