Delhi’s Air Quality Stays ‘Very Poor’ at AQI 397; Protesters Use Pepper Spray on Police

According to CPCB (Central Pollution Control Board) data, there was no improvement in Delhi's air quality, which remained at the 'Very Poor'  with an overall Air Quality Index of 397 recorded at 6:00 AM.

It remained despite low wind pressure and a drop in temperature. In Delhi, out of 39 monitoring stations, 20 were placed in 'Severe Zone' as their AQI recorded was above 400.

While the AQI recorded at the other 10 stations ranged between 300 and 400. They were categorised in the 'Very Poor' zone.

Why Has Delhi’s Air Quality Been So ‘Very Poor’?

Since November 6, the air quality of Delhi has not shown any improvement. It has been in the 'Very Poor' category for a continuous 18 days, with three days of severe pollution from November 11 to November 13.

The air worsened due to the rise in winter, as well as farm fires that increased after Diwali in October. There were several other factors involved.

Places Recorded with the Worst AQI

Places that recorded the worst AQI were Vivek Vihar (458), Rohini (458), Jahangirpuri (455), Wazirpur (448), and DTU (444).

According to the CPCB (Central Pollution Control Board), Delhi's AQI index at 4 pm on Sunday was recorded as 391, indicating 'Very Poor' air quality.

On Saturday and Sunday, it measured 364 on Friday and 370 on Saturday. The toxic smog that shrouded the city for weeks has raised health problems among residents with respiratory, pulmonary, and ocular issues.

Doctors and health experts have also raised alarms over deteriorating air quality issues, prompting the government to implement Stage 4 measures of GRAP (Graded Response Action Plan) under Stage 3.

Protests Over Poor Air Quality Descend Into Chaos

Expressing serious concern over toxic air pollution in the Delhi-NCR region on Sunday evening, a huge gathering of senior citizens staged protests at India Gate.

The situation became more serious and chaotic when demonstrators used pepper spray on the Delhi Police as they were trying to remove them from the spot.

According to the group, if the state itself is not serious about poisonous air, then people are forced to take action and speak about their survival.

While addressing Press Trust of India (PTI), the Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi), Devesh Kumar, stated that after sensing a situation that could escalate into chaos, the police personnel advised protesters to step back.

According to him, it was the first time the pepper spray was used on officers managing traffic and law and order.

He further said that protestors sprayed on the eyes and faces of some of our officers. They are currently admitted to RML Hospital. A legal action is underway.
