2 Air Force Pilots Killed in Sukhoi Su-30 Crash in Assam

In recent breaking news, a Su-30MKI fighter jet crashed in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district during a training mission.

​During the crash, two Indian Air Force (IAF) pilots - Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar lost their lives.

​IAF confirmed both pilots succumbed to their injuries in the crash.

​An Indian Air Force statement acknowledged the loss of Sqn Ldr Anuj and Flt Lt Purvesh Duragkar in the Su-30 crash.

​Hence, all IAF personnel express their sincere condolences to the bereaved family at this time of grief.

Sukhoi Su-30 plane crash in Assam: Brief Analysis of the Incident?

The Sukhoi-30MKI took off from Jorhat airbase on Thursday evening and lost contact with ground control.

​Defence officials earlier said that communication with the Russian-origin fighter jet was broken around 7:42 PM.

​The aircraft later crashed in Karbi Anglong district, about 60 km from Jorhat. As reported earlier, there were no signs of the jet after take-off, prompting search-and-rescue operations to locate the aircraft and its two pilots.

Loud Explosion Heard Near Hill Area By Locals

According to local residents, they heard a loud explosion near the remote hill area close to Nilip block in Karbi Anglong at 7:00 PM.

​Some images of the alleged crash, which are yet to be verified, are circulating on social media.

​The Su-30MKI is a twin-seat fighter jet made by Sukhoi and produced in India by HAL for the Indian Air Force.

Past Accidents Involving The Aircraft

The Indian Air Force runs a fleet of more than 260 Su-30MKI jets. Besides this latest plane crash in India, there have been a few past accidents involving this aircraft, including one in Maharashtra’s Nashik district and another in January 2023, when the aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Gwalior base.
