Why Did Iran Launch a Missile Attack on US-UK Base in Indian Ocean?

The ongoing war between Iran and the US has now moved to the Indian Ocean, following two major incidents indicating the expansion of the war.

Indian Ocean news: According to a Wall Street Journal report, two ballistic missiles were fired from Iran on US-UK military base on the island of Diego Garcia.

However, both missiles failed to hit the target. One failed mid-air, and another was intercepted by a US warship. There is no clarity on whether it was hit.

Diego Garcia military base is about 4,000 km from Iran. Earlier, experts believed that missiles fired by Iran could not make it that far. But now, after the attack on the base, its range can reach Europe’s major cities.

Till now, no comment has come from the Pentagon on the recent attack.

Iran Has Sent a Strong Warning to Western Nations: Tewari

According to former Union Minister Manish Tewari, with the recent ballistic missile attack in the Indian Ocean, Iran has elevated war conditions and has sent a strong message to Western nations.

Previous Case of Submarine Attack

Iran war latest news: The recent attack on the Indian Ocean targeting US and UK bases is not a new incident reported.

There has been an earlier incident when an Iranian warship, IRIS Dena, was sunk by a US submarine, near Sri Lanka,  through torpedo, which claimed over 85 lives.

The warship was said to be returning from India’s MILAN 2026 naval exercise.

According to the United States, one of its key objectives in the war is to dampen Iran’s navy, a campaign that began on February 28, 2026.

The United States has been using the Diego Garcia base for military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Being one of the two British bases which US is currently using for operations, the UK terms it as a defensive mechanism against Iran.

Although Britain plans to hand over control of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, it will continue to use the Diego Garcia base under a lease.

But this does not seem convincing to US President Donald Trump, who opposes this move.
