Modi Trump G7 Talks: Strained India-US Ties Face Trust and Trade Challenges
Modi Trump G7 Talks: Small gestures often reveal how leaders relate to each other. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi met US President Donald Trump at the G7 Summit after 16 months, their usual bear hug was missing and the warmth from earlier meetings had faded.
They only shook hands, and Trump patted PM Modi on the arm.
Earlier, during the group photo, they did not make eye contact or exchange greetings. These signs suggested their relationship might be strained.
There is still hope that relations can improve, as Modi and Trump are scheduled to meet in person for the first time since February 2025 on Wednesday.
Modi Trump G7 Talks: From First Handshake to Frosty Ties: Can Modi Reset Relations with Trump at G7?
PM Modi was among the first world leaders to meet Trump after his election win. Since then, the relationship has faced challenges.
Trump has imposed tariffs on India, built closer ties with Pakistan, and introduced immigration policies that have affected Indian students and workers in the US.
A long-awaited trade deal still has not been reached. More recently, the deaths of three Indian sailors in the Gulf of Oman during US strikes have hurt hopes for better relations.
This setback came just as things seemed to be improving after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited in May.

G7 Summit France: Modi Flags Global ‘Trust Deficit’ Beside Trump at G7
India US Relations: With all this in mind, PM Modi and Trump met on Tuesday at the G7 Summit in France.
Along with the missing hugs and warmth, PM Modi’s direct comments highlighted the tension in India-US relations.
Standing next to Trump, PM Modi said the world today "suffers from a shortage of trust" and that the "future of our partnerships depends on rebuilding this trust".
"The world is not suffering from a deficit of resources; it is suffering from a deficit of trust," PM Modi said.
Modi Trump Bilateral Talks in France: PM Modi’s Indirect Message on Seafarer Safety
Modi Trump G7 Talks: PM Modi did not directly mention the deaths of Indian sailors, but he noted that the US-Iran conflict had caused Indian casualties.
He emphasized that countries need to protect shipping routes and the lives of seafarers. Again, PM Modi did not name any country in his speech, but it was clear who he was referring to.
The gap widened when the US suddenly dropped 'Indo' from the name of its largest military command, renaming it the US Indo-Pacific Command. The map used for the announcement also showed PO.
During Trump’s first term, the command was renamed the Indo-Pacific Command, which was seen as a sign that India was becoming more important to the United States.
India US Ties Reset: Why India-US Relations Face New Challenges in the Trump Era
Modi Trump G7 Talks: How did India-US relations reach this point? The US has long viewed India as a key ally to help balance China’s influence in Asia.
But under Trump, who is known for his dramatic style and desire for attention, India has often had to deal with his unpredictable comments and actions.
Trump claimed he ended the India-Pakistan military conflict in May last year by threatening both countries with steep tariffs. However, India said the fighting ended at Pakistan's request.
PM Modi’s repeated refusal to accept Trump’s claim or nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize has also added to the tension.
However, the biggest impact from the downturn in relations has been economic. Last year, Trump singled out India for buying Russian oil and doubled India's overall tariff rate to 50%.
Modi Trump Latest News: Trump Slams India as a 'Dead Economy'"
Modi Trump G7 Talks: Trump also made harsh remarks, calling India a "dead economy" and sharing a post that described Delhi as a "hellhole", which added to the tensions.
The tariff rate was later reduced to 18% after both countries agreed to a framework trade deal in February.
Defence ties have also stalled, mainly because the American company GE has delayed delivering engines for the Tejas Mk1A fighter jets. This has been a major point of disagreement.
India has handled Trump's strong words with maturity. Despite his tough talk, India has responded calmly and taken practical steps.
Narendra Modi Donald Trump Meeting: Friendship Bent, Not Broken
Modi Trump Latest Update: PM Modi has avoided public arguments with Trump over the past year. The US envoy to India said, "real friends can disagree, but always resolve their differences in the end."
For Modi and Trump, the friendship may be under stress, but it is not broken.
Last week, the US President congratulated Modi for becoming India’s longest-serving prime minister. "And a great one he is!" Trump wrote on Truth Social.
That is why the meeting between PM Modi and Trump on Wednesday evening will be closely watched. It will show whether their personal connection can once again guide India-US relations.
