10 Most Polluted City in India: Latest AQI Rankings List

Air pollution is one of the biggest health challenges in India. With rapid urbanisation and industrial growth, air quality has been affected the worst. Some of the cities in the country are so polluted that they rank among the most polluted places in the world! In India, cities in the northern part of the country are consistently reporting high AQI. Do you want to know which is the most polluted city in India? Keep reading on to find which one has earned this grim reputation…

1. Loni (Uttar Pradesh)

The city almost always stays in this “severe” category of pollution, with a PM2.5 concentration of about 112.5 µg/m³ (averaged annually). It is also the “highest air pollution city in India”. It is extremely affected by industrial emissions and traffic. Regional pollution is also a concern there.

2. Delhi

Second on the list is none other than the national capital itself. Its AQI often swings into the hazardous range of 240-500+.

And not just India, Delhi is also counted among the most polluted cities in Asia. It has also held the notorious title of world’s most polluted capital.

The breathing air becomes extremely dangerous, especially in early mornings and at night.

3. Muzaffarnagar

This is yet another constant in the list of ‘most polluted cities in India.

This Uttar Pradesh city suffers from high AQI for reasons different from Delhi. While in the capital, pollution is mainly due to vehicle emissions and construction dust, in Muzaffarnagar, it is mainly due to crop burning and dust.

4. Noida

This Uttar Pradesh hub is popular for its modern lifestyle. But the construction dust and nearby industrial pollution take the ‘city experience’ one or two rungs down. Here, AQI stays around 260 and is declining.

5. Greater Noida (Uttar Pradesh)

Meet the richer cousin of Noida! This is yet another UP city with a high AQI, slightly higher than Noida's (around 265).

Rapid urbanisation and construction here have led to poor air quality.

6. Hapur

This city also lies in Uttar Pradesh with an AQI swinging around 265.

The poor air quality here is mainly due to brick kilns and large-scale industrial emissions, making it one of the highly polluted city in India

7. Meerut

Meerut is another city in the state of Uttar Pradesh with poor AQI.

With heavy traffic congestion and seasonal agricultural burning, the AQI typically hovers around 247. Dust is another reason for the constantly high pollution levels here.

8. Agra

This Uttar Pradesh city, although famous for its unique Mughal architectural wonders, has earned a bad reputation for its poor air quality. Its AQI usually stays around 246.

The pollution here is mainly from tourism-related traffic. Other causes of poor AQI here include industrial emissions and dust particles.

9. Bahadurgarh

This Haryana city is located close to Delhi and is therefore heavily impacted by pollution spillover from the NCR. AQI here stays around 241.

While the air quality of Delhi stays ‘severe’ for a good part of the year, Bahadurgarh has reached ‘poor’ quality of air from the transfer of particle and gas pollutants.

10. Bhiwadi

This Rajasthan city is another place with poor AQI, which remains high at 235. As it is witnessing a rapid industrialisation, it is constantly ranking in the ‘most polluted city list in India’.

Large-scale manufacturing here also contributes to the pollution.

Most Polluted City in Maharashtra

The most polluted city in Maharashtra is, hands down, Mumbai, the city with 24/7 hustle culture and a fast-paced life.

Here are some of the most polluted cities in the western state:

  • Mumbai: It suffers from pollution mainly due to traffic and construction dust. Coastal humidity also contributes to it.
  • Pune: This city is seeing rising pollution primarily from rapid urbanisation.
  • Nagpur: The main causes of pollution here are industrial and vehicular pollution.

Nashik and Aurangabad are also among the most polluted cities in the state.

And while they don’t have pollution levels as extreme as the ones shown by some north Indian cities, the steady rise in pollution here is definitely a concern.

Most Polluted City in Punjab

Punjab, although known for its lush meadows and greenery, also suffers from severe pollution. The major cause of pollution here is crop-burning.

When it comes to the most polluted city in Punjab, the title goes to Ludhiana. It carries the infamous label mainly because it has an industrial base. Seasonal stubble burning, however, also significantly impacts air quality.

Some other pollution-affected cities in the state include Amritsar, Jalandhar, and Patiala.

During the winter, the AQI reaches hazardous levels because of combined regional pollution.

Conclusion

The most polluted city in India is Loni, located in Uttar Pradesh. It is closely followed by the national capital Delhi, and then Muzaffarnagar & Noida,

The main causes of air pollution in urban areas are vehicular emissions and industrial pollution. Construction dust and crop burning also worsen the air quality in some cities.

To move towards a cleaner environment, understanding the causes and impacts of pollution is crucial. Combined efforts from both governments and industries are required to create healthier living conditions.
