Rahul Gandhi Petition Against Gyanesh Kumar Faces Setback Over 14 Registry Objections
INDIA bloc petition against CEC: On Tuesday, the Supreme Court said it will not hear the petition filed by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and ten other INDIA bloc leaders. According to the report, the court registry found 14 issues upon filing. These include a ₹220 shortfall in court fees, a very blurry photocopy of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's ID card, and the absence of vakalatnamas for nine of the 11 petitioners.
Opposition petition against CEC: The petitioners’ lawyers requested for the the next hearing for Wednesday after resolving the issues. Because of the registry's objection, the Opposition leaders' application for an independent, time-bound inquiry into decisions (allegedly taken by only the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar) and for a suspension of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls may be put off. The court was expected to take up that application, along with several others relating to the protests in Delhi calling for Mr Kumar's resignation.

The vakalatnamas that are missing are for Akhilesh Yadav (SP), Tejashwi Prasad Yadav (RJD), Supriya Sule (NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar), Sanjay Raut (Shiv Sena (UBT)) and Saugata Roy (TMC). Gyanesh Kumar Latest Update | Advocate S Prasanna Files Petition
Rahul Gandhi petition against Gyanesh Kumar: Advocate S Prasanna, who filed the petition, seeks an independent, time-bound inquiry into the decisions which CEC Kumar is alleged to have taken unilaterally, including the June 2025 decision to initiate the SIR.
The ECI, CEC Kumar and the two other election commissioners (Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi) are the respondents. The Opposition said they went to the Supreme Court in the course of their public duty to 'protect the constitutional guarantee of universal adult suffrage' and ensure the election process remains free, fair, transparent, and accountable.
The petitioners have made it clear that they are not seeking to reopen the issue of the SIR's validity. They are simply concerned whether the Supreme Court's safeguards and the rule that the ECI must act as a group were observed during the process.
14 Defects in Rahul Gandhi's Petition

If one member was, in fact, exercising the collective powers alone, that would raise a serious question about whether Article 324 of the Constitution and Section 18 of the 2023 Act were being followed. This is not simply an internal administrative matter. This is about whether the institution which is meant to safeguard the integrity of our elections is, in fact, abiding by the law.
