Vijay Lok Sabha Seat Delimitation: On Thursday, Tamil Nadu chief minister C. P. Vijayakanth asked the central government to make sure southern states do not lose parliamentary seats because they have managed to control population growth.

His comments sparked a political dispute, with both the DMK and the AIADMK accusing him of changing his stance on delimitation.

Vijay Lok Sabha Seat Delimitation: Skips Assembly Resolution, Demands Seats Protected Against Population Control

Vijay spoke at the 31st Southern Zonal Council meeting in Mahabalipuram. He did not refer to the August 12 Tamil Nadu assembly resolution, which called for keeping the 543 Lok Sabha seats unchanged and maintaining the current seat distribution among states.

Vijay asked the Union government to clearly promise that no state would lose its share of parliamentary seats for effectively managing its population.

He said this would be fair, keep the federal balance, and help states trust democratic institutions.

Vijay U-turn on Delimitation: Both the DMK and AIADMK criticised Vijay’s comments. DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai said Vijay was changing his position on the delimitation issue and called it a complete U-turn.

The party’s IT Wing said Vijay’s current position was the same as the Union government’s, which is why the AIADMK supported the delimitation bill when it was introduced.

They also asked why the resolution was needed if the government planned to change its position.

Vijay Lok Sabha Seat Delimitation: The TVK defended Vijay’s comments, saying the party’s position has not changed.

The party’s IT Wing said the Chief Minister’s speech reflected a broad and forward-looking approach to protecting the current representation of southern states that have managed their population growth.

They added that the August 12 assembly resolution expressed the same position in practical terms. They also said some people were sharing opinions about delimitation without fully understanding the issue.

After the meeting, Minister for Energy Resources and Law CTR Nirmalkumar told reporters that the government’s position had not changed. He said they support keeping the number of Lok Sabha seats at 543.​

P. Chidambaram Supports Vijay Government on Delimitation

Vijay Lok Sabha Seat Delimitation: On Friday, Congress leader P Chidambaram said the party agrees with the Vijay government’s stance on delimitation and wants to keep the Lok Sabha’s 543 seats and Tamil Nadu’s 39 constituencies as they are.

Chidambaram posted on X that the Lok Sabha delimitation, the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly’s resolution, and the Congress Working Committee’s resolution all express the same opinion.

He said Congress wants the number of Lok Sabha seats and state constituencies to remain unchanged for the next 25 years.

Chidambaram also welcomed support for this view from both the ruling ADMK and the main opposition DMK in Tamil Nadu.

At the 31st Southern Zonal Council meeting in Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay asked the Centre to clearly promise that no state would lose parliamentary representation under the proposed Delimitation Bill, 2026.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah led the meeting. Vijay said that with the freeze on Lok Sabha seat allocation from the 1971 Census ending and the Delimitation Bill, 2026 approaching, southern states worry that using population as the main factor for delimitation could weaken their voice in Parliament.

Vijay Lok Sabha Seat Delimitation: According to the media, Vijay said southern states should not be penalised for their success in stabilising population under the proposed plan.

He also noted that these states have led in population control, human development, and economic growth.

Vijay added that these achievements demonstrate the successful implementation of national goals and should not lead to reduced parliamentary representation.

He said public policy should not unintentionally penalise states for meeting national objectives.

Vijay Lok Sabha Seat Delimitation: The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister urged the Union government to provide a clear legislative guarantee that no state will lose parliamentary representation because it succeeded in controlling its population.

Vijay said this guarantee would promote fairness, maintain the federal balance set by the Constitution, and help build trust in India’s democratic institutions.
