Diljit Dosanjh Punjab 95: After years of delays and a long battle with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), director Honey Trehan’s much-awaited film Punjab 95 has finally been released.
Punjab 95 finally releases on ZEE5: Now titled Satluj, the film started streaming exclusively on ZEE5 on Friday evening.
The film stars Diljit Dosanjh, Kanwaljeet Singh, Arjun Rampal, Suvinder Vicky, and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan.
Inspired by the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, it tells the story of a difficult period in Punjab’s history.

Diljit Dosanjh Punjab 95: Satluj Trailer Explores Punjab’s Militancy Era Through a Fight for Justice
The film focuses on alleged disappearances, extra-judicial killings, and illegal detentions during the fight against Khalistani militancy in the 1980s and 1990s.
The makers also released the official trailer, which runs for over two minutes. It set up the political and social atmosphere of Punjab in 1995.
In a voiceover, Arjun Rampal’s character says that while the police were fighting militancy, some officers allegedly misused the situation for their personal benefit.
The trailer then introduces Suvinder Vicky as a police officer who warns Diljit Dosanjh’s character, Jaswant Singh, against speaking out against the police, saying it could cost him his life.
The rest of the trailer shows scenes of alleged police brutality as Jaswant refuses to give up his fight for justice.
Determined to protect his community and defend human rights, he challenges a system shown as trying to hide the truth.

The trailer also follows his efforts to raise the issue internationally and highlights his long fight for justice for more than 25,000 people who allegedly went missing.
In one scene, Jaswant says that they are neither against the police nor the government, but against those who crossed the limits of humanity for personal promotions.
The trailer ends with Jaswant’s abduction and disappearance, highlighting the tragic fate of a man who dedicated his life to seeking justice for others.
The film’s release brings an end to nearly three years of uncertainty. On Instagram Stories, director Honey Trehan thanked everyone who supported the film during its long journey.
He also clarified that although the title has changed, viewers will get to watch the complete version of the film without any cuts.

Diljit Dosanjh Punjab 95: Trehan said the team could not keep the original title, so the film has been renamed Satluj.
He added that it is being released in its full original form, without any cuts or compromises, exactly as the makers had intended.
He also credited Diljit Dosanjh and the producers for standing firm and protecting the film’s vision.
Trehan said that both he and Diljit had always maintained that they would not support a compromised version of the film.
Thanking everyone for their support and prayers, he said the team was fortunate that they did not have to make those compromises.
Satluj Faced Years of CBFC Delays and 21 Cuts
Diljit Dosanjh Latest News: The film’s long delay began after it was submitted to the CBFC in 2022. Over the next several months, the board asked for multiple cuts before granting certification.
In September 2023, Punjab 95 was selected to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
However, the filmmakers were later informed by Indian authorities that the screening would have to be withdrawn.
In an interview with the media last year, Honey Trehan spoke about the long certification process.
He said he had reluctantly agreed to 21 cuts in the beginning because he hoped it would stop the film from getting stuck.
Trehan said the board wanted the film’s name changed from the very beginning. It was originally titled Ghalughara, and they also asked the makers to remove the line “inspired by true events.”
Satluj Faced Repeated CBFC Cut Demands, Says Honey Trehan
Diljit Dosanjh Latest Update: After making those changes and submitting a new print, the team was asked to make more cuts. They complied again, but the process continued without any clear progress.
According to Trehan, the same cycle continued throughout 2024, with new cuts being suggested after every submission.
At the start of 2025, there were discussions about releasing the film outside India, but that plan also did not move forward.

Diljit Dosanjh Punjab 95: Speaking about the CBFC’s demands, Honey Trehan said several changes were conveyed as “non-negotiable,” including changing Jaswant Singh Khalra’s name, removing visuals of the Indian flag and Gurbani, avoiding references to the Punjab Police, and changing the film’s title.
The matter reached the Bombay High Court, but the case was later withdrawn. Trehan said the prolonged delays left him feeling betrayed, adding that compromising on Khalra’s story would have been a moral failure and felt like Khalra was being silenced once again.
Satluj Movie Release Date
The film was released direct-to-digital on ZEE5 on Friday, July 4, 2026, after years of delays related to its certification process.
