Satluj Controversy: DSGMC Protests Diljit Dosanjh Film's Removal, Plans Public Screenings

Satluj Controversy: A few days after Zee5 took down the political drama Satluj, which stars Diljit Dosanjh, the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) spoke out against the move.

They say it tries to silence the story of social activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. To keep the film accessible, the DSGMC plans to hold public screenings and educational seminars.

Jaswant Singh Khalra biopic: Directed by Honey Trehan, Satluj chronicles the life of Khalra, a prominent human rights activist in 1990s Punjab.

On Tuesday, DSGMC President Harmeet Singh Kalka said the film tells the story of Jaswant Singh Khalra.

He explained that it highlights Khalra’s efforts to uncover alleged human rights abuses in Punjab and that everyone should have the chance to see it.

It features a portrait of Jaswant Singh Khalra and focuses on his efforts to uncover important facts.

The film also shows how he found evidence of 25,000 bodies that were cremated as "unclaimed" and how he raised awareness about what was happening in Punjab, both in India and abroad.

He also announced that the committee will organise public screenings of the film and hold seminars in schools and colleges about Khalra’s life and work.

Furthermore, the committee has asked all its members to download and screen the film in their respective areas to maximise viewership, with plans to meet soon with the heads of their educational institutions.

He added that every college would host seminars on Jaswant Singh Khalra to highlight his life and legacy and wanted people to see how much one social activist can change society.

According to him, if one person can do so much, then everyone can make a difference by working together.

Diljit Dosanjh on 'Satluj' Ban: The More You Try to Stop It, the More People Will Talk About It

Satluj Controversy: Dosanjh, who portrays Khalra in the film, said in a video shared on Instagram that he had anticipated the film might be banned after government offices reopened on Monday, though he did not expect the action to come as early as Sunday evening.

Speaking in Punjabi, he explained that the team intentionally avoided promoting the film or announcing its release in advance, believing it would not have been screened otherwise.

He expressed relief that the film had already reached audiences, noting that many people had downloaded it and that young viewers were actively discussing it.

Diljit also said he had seen a video of the film being screened at a gurdwara using a projector and added that the more attempts were made to stop the film, the more people would talk about Jaswant Singh Khalra.

He further stated that the team had been fighting for the film's release for the past four years.
