Sonam Wangchuk, a mechanical engineer, has spent over 30 years working to improve education.
In 1988, he started SECMOL, the Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh, to help reform government schools in Ladakh, India.
He helped start Operation New Hope, a program that brought together the government, village communities, and civil society to improve government schools.
The project set up village education committees, trained teachers in child-friendly methods, and created local textbooks for Ladakh.
To help students who did not pass their state exams, he opened the SECMOL Alternative School Campus near Leh.
This school welcomes students who have failed exams rather than choosing them based on grades. As an engineer, Wangchuk teaches innovation there.
Together with students, he helped design and build affordable, solar-heated buildings made from earth and mud.
These buildings stay at 15°C inside, even when it is minus 15°C outside during Ladakhi winters.
To address the water crisis in mountainous regions caused by climate change and glacial melt, he invented the Ice Stupa.
This artificial glacier stores winter stream water in large ice cones and releases it in late spring, when farmers need water the most.
Now, he is applying his practical approach to higher education and working to establish a university focused on learning through experience.
