Supreme Court Fines Samay Raina: On Tuesday, the Supreme Court strongly criticised comedian Samay Raina, saying he had misled the court by making false statements and failing to keep his promises. 

The court fined Raina and fellow comedians Vipul Goyal, Balraj Ghai, Sonali Thakkar, and Nishant Tanwar Rs 3 lakh each. 

They have two weeks to pay, and the court warned that the penalty could increase if they do not comply.

During the hearing, the judges also raised concerns about Raina's public image. 

Amicus curiae Aparajita Singh told the court that Raina continued to perform shows but had not reached out to the SMA Foundation or people affected by SMA, even though the court had instructed him to do so. 

She asked, "What kind of youth icon is he?" and added, "I shudder to think."

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant also expressed his displeasure with Raina's response to the court. He reportedly said, "Throw it away," and questioned why the reply was filed after such a long delay. 

Creators Ranveer Allahbadia and Ashish Chanchlani, as well as the Cure SMA Foundation, were also involved in the controversy over remarks mocking visually impaired people during the first season of India's Got Latent. 

The court noted that Raina had not kept his earlier promises.

Supreme Court Fines Samay Raina: The bench, which included Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice JV Mohana, ordered the five comedians to issue a public apology, file compliance affidavits, and organise two special comedy shows each month to raise money for children with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).

The bench also warned that if the comedians did not comply on time, the penalty could increase significantly. 

The Chief Justice said, "One more zero can be added," meaning the fine could increase from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 30 lakh per person. 

Disability Jokes Backlash: SC Orders Apologies from Samay Raina, Comedians 

Samay Raina False Statement Case: In 2025, Samay Raina and the other comedians made remarks about people with disabilities, including those with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), an infant with the condition, and blind or cross-eyed individuals.

The remarks led to widespread outrage. As a result, the Supreme Court summoned the comedians and ordered them to post public apologies on their social media accounts. 

Kant also called for stronger legal protections against jokes about disabilities, suggesting that Parliament consider a law similar to the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act to make such jokes punishable offences.

Supreme Court Fines Samay Raina: The Chief Justice recommended a law like the SC/ST Act, with clear penalties for insulting people with disabilities. 

The Solicitor General agreed, saying that humour should never come at the expense of anyone's dignity.

In October 2025, Raina and comedians Vipul Goyal, Sonali Thakkar, Nishant Tanwar, and Balraj Ghai released a joint statement expressing regret over the controversy. 

They said they deeply regret the pain their show caused and promised to be more mindful in the future. 

They also said they would work to raise awareness of the challenges the community faces, adding that the community’s strength inspires them and expressing their respect and gratitude.

Comedian Samay Raina’s talent show, India’s Got Latent, has been in the news lately, but for controversial reasons. 

The show, known for comedians and creators testing the limits of humour, has faced criticism for offensive jokes, heated debates, and moments that have stirred up social media.

Over a year after the controversy, Samay Raina returned with season two of the show. 

The first guests were Alia Bhatt and Sharvari, who appeared as their film Alpha was released on July 3.

In a recent interview, co-star Bobby Deol was asked about the show, which is now available on Netflix. 

The Bandar actor responded with a lighthearted remark, jokingly said 'Yeh kaunsa show hai?.

YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, also known as BeerBiceps, was criticised for asking a contestant a shocking question. 

He asked if they would rather “watch their parents have sex for the rest of their life or join in once to stop it.” The crude joke caused public outrage and led Ranveer to apologise.
