Assam Flood Death Toll: Seven more people died on Tuesday, bringing the total number of deaths in Assam due to the floods to 75.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) stated that all seven deaths took place in the Nazira revenue circle of Sivasagar district.

Although the number of deaths has increased, the overall flood situation is improving.

Flood-affected villages in Assam: Flooding is still affecting the districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, Sonitpur and Kamrup Metropolitan. A total of 622 villages in 21 revenue circles have been affected.

The area most severely impacted is Charaideo, with 1,42,756 people affected, then coming Sivasagar and Jorhat.

The Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, stated in a Facebook Live session that the government has now made it easier for the families of those who died in the floods to obtain ex gratia payments.

According to Sarma, families will no longer be required to submit a post-mortem report; instead, they only need a certificate issued by the circle officer in order to claim compensation.

Additionally, families will receive an extra Rs 5 lakh from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund on top of the current Rs 4 lakh ex gratia, making the total compensation for those who died in the floods Rs 9 lakh.

He also mentioned that, together with the current Rs 4 lakh ex gratia payment given to each victim's family, the government will provide an additional Rs 5 lakh from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund to the families of those who died.

If the bodies of missing persons are not found within a month, their families will receive the same amount, with the circle officer being authorised to send the required certificate.

Approximately one lakh families who have been severely affected in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat will receive interim financial assistance of Rs 15,000.

This money will be paid directly into their bank accounts to assist with immediate household expenses.

Assam Flood Death Toll: Higher Orunodoi Benefits, Education Grants Announced

As another relief step, Orunodoi scheme beneficiaries in these four districts will get Rs 2,500 for August, instead of the usual Rs 1,250. Sarma said this temporary increase will be balanced by a small increase.

Students in Sivasagar and Charaideo whose education had been disrupted by the floods will receive financial assistance for books and uniforms.

The government will pay higher secondary students Rs 1,000, undergraduates Rs 3,000, and postgraduates Rs 5,000 so they can afford books, and the charge for duplicate marksheets will also be waived.

Sarma stated that over Rs 26 crore has been raised for the Chief Minister's Relief Fund since the most recent floods started about 10 days ago; this amount comprises Rs 60 lakh from micro-donations made by 4,610 individuals.

The money will be used to provide interim relief, educational assistance, and other forms of help not included in the present government regulations.
