Cyclone Ditwah Red Alert: IMD Predicts Landfall in Tamil Nadu Tomorrow

Tamil Nadu is on Red alert, as cyclone Ditwah is slowly reaching several parts of the south Indian state and the Puducherry coastline. It has posed a risk of heavy rain, strong winds and flooding across many southern states, including Kerala and Telangana.

IMD (India Meteorological Department) has issued a red alert for the coastal districts - Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Puducherry, and Mayiladuthurai. Authorities have warned residents to stay alert for heavy rainfall.

 

According to IMD experts, the cyclone is currently active in Sri Lanka and the southwest Bay of Bengal. It can escalate slowly as it exits Sri Lanka and enters the open waters of the Bay of Bengal.

Cyclone Ditwah Racing Towards Tamil Nadu–Puducherry Coastline, IMD Updates

In the latest Ditwah cyclone update, IMD chief Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra clarified that the storm is racing towards the north-northwest and will reach north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts in the early morning hours of November 30.

While briefing a news agency, he mentioned, “We expect it to come out of Sri Lanka and enter the southwest Bay of Bengal by the 29th of November. Then there could be a slight intensification.”

Heavy Rainfall Alert in Tamil Nadu

The IMD also said in a bulletin that extreme heavy rainfall will hit the coastal Tamil Nadu on Saturday. In contrast, there will be more heavy rainfall in other regions, and light to moderate showers in the surrounding areas.

The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a red alert for areas expected to receive intense downpour. These are Puducherry, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Chengalpattu, and Villupuram.

From Saturday to Sunday morning, gale-force winds of 70 to 80 kmph will gust up to 90 kmph, lashing the north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts.

These strong winds will cause massive damage to standing crops in the ripening stage, hoardings, uproot trees, and weaken structures such as thatched or mud houses.

IMD chief also added that by December 1, rainfall will decrease to light and moderate levels at some places. However, some isolated areas might still receive heavy rain.

Heavy Rain Alert for Additional Southern Regions

On Saturday, Kerala, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, and Yanam will receive heavy rainfall with light to moderate at many places.

At the same time, isolated spots can expect heavy rains. Regions that may witness extreme rainfall with the cyclone's arrival on the Andhra coast on Sunday.

In contrast, light to moderate rain will occur in some parts of Telangana.
