LPU Students Rape Protest: Students Claim Video on Rape Allegations Was Scripted

Students at Punjab’s Lovely Professional University (LPU) claimed that a university video about rape allegations in a hostel was scripted. Three students said they were told what to say, and that the video was edited and posted without their knowledge or consent.

The claims came during major protests at LPU after a student was reportedly raped by a construction worker on campus and later died by suicide.

Protesters damaged university property, set parts of buildings on fire and blocked the Jalandhar-Phagwara highway. They were demanding that police register an FIR against the accused.

During the protests, LPU posted a video on Instagram and X featuring registrar Monika Gulati.

Student Sexual Assault Allegation: The video addressed allegations about an incident in Room 504 of Girls’ Hostel 3 (GH3). The university said the students living in the room should share their side of the story.

In the video, one student said she had been living in the room for around two months and had not seen anything like the alleged incident.

Another said she was upset and would involve her parents if the alleged harassment continued. The third student asked police to stop repeatedly visiting the room.

Later, the three students appeared in another video and said they had been instructed about what to say.

They also claimed other students were harassing them and said they had simply followed the instructions given to them.

One student said only part of the original recording was used before the video was posted on Instagram, claiming it had been edited. The students also said the video was posted without their knowledge or consent.

One student claimed that all three had faced abuse and offensive comments.

Another said they had nothing to do with the alleged incident and asked people to stop harassing them. She said the room mentioned in the allegations had been selected randomly and that they were not involved.

LPU Students Rape Protest: According to complaints from protesting students, a construction worker allegedly raped a female student in the university hostel three days before the protests. The students also alleged that the hostel warden sent the victim home instead of reporting the matter to police.

DIG Jalandhar Range Naveen Singla said the student had reportedly died by suicide. LPU, however, denied the rape and suicide allegations. The university blamed “anti-social elements” for spreading confusion and trying to disturb the campus.

LPU Students Rape Protest: Police are continuing to investigate the matter. Singla said five representatives of the protesting students had joined the investigation team.

He said the case would be thoroughly investigated and digital and technical evidence would be collected.

Police are also examining the hostel and checking CCTV footage.

Meanwhile, LPU announced that regular classes would remain suspended for 10 days from September 28. Mid-term exams were also postponed until further notice.

LPU News: LPU Allows Students to Return Home, Advises Those Staying on Campus to Remain in Hostels

The university said students could return to their hometowns during the 10-day period after consulting their parents or legal guardians.

Lovely Professional University students who remained on campus were asked to stay in their hostels, avoid unnecessary movement and stay away from any unrest.
