PM Modi Israel Visit Puts Him in Spotlight After Iran Strikes
Hardly 48 hours after the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrapped up his high-profile two-day visit to Israel, where he addressed the country’s parliament, Knesset, and made a declaration about India’s firm stance with Israel, the United States and Israel carried out a joint military operation against Iran.
On Saturday, Tehran and other Iranian cities were targeted by missiles and airstrikes, which triggered regional tensions.
Opposition Criticises PM Modi For His Israel Visit Amid War Situation
The opposition is facing backlash over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-day visit to Israel. Party Communications Chief Jairam Ramesh even termed it as the ‘Highest Moral Cowardice’.
He argued that Modi chose the wrong time to visit Israel despite clear indications of military escalation.
Writing on X, Ramesh mentioned that after two days, when Modi celebrated his visit to Israel, Iran faced a joint assault from the United States and Israel, too.
Furthermore, he said that the military buildup has created the possibility of a war.
Despite it, Modi chose to visit Israel, and even supported Israel publicly, received an award, and now calls the trip ‘shameful’ after the war was waged by two of his good friends.
As per the Israel-Iran war update, Iranians did make counterattacks by targeting US bases across West Asia. New Delhi has yet to make any declaration regarding evacuation plans.
Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi requested the government to take swift action, emphasising the safety of Indian citizens across the Middle East, calling it the highest priority.
Jairam Ramesh Condemns the US-Israel Attack on Iran
Besides criticising Narendra Modi’s Israel visit, Jairam Ramesh also condemned the US-Israel joint move in attacking Iran.
He made accusations against US President Donald Trump in staging a ‘charade of diplomacy’ with Iran.
Ramesh also alleged that this attack was done with the motive to change the ruling Iranian government. He requested India to stop the violence and ensure the safety of millions of Indians employed in the region.
Modi Statement in Israel
Modi arrived in Tel Aviv on February 25 for his two-day visit. While addressing the Knesset Parliament of Israel, he expressed deep grief about the victims who lost their lives in the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.
He also mentioned India’s supportive stance towards Israel’s sorrow. Recalling the incident, Israeli forces attacked in Gaza and killed around 70,000 people after Hamas took 1,200 lives in Israel.
Benjamin Netanyahu and Modi: PM Honoured by Knesset Speaker
During his speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Israel a protective wall against barbarism, which matched the language which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu often prefers.
After addressing the parliament, Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana honoured Modi with the newly instituted Speaker of the Knesset Medal.
India and Israel also signed agreements on areas such as artificial intelligence, defence cooperation, cybersecurity, and agriculture. It also included a defence deal costing $10 billion.
Opposition Slams PM Modi On Accepting Honours in Israel
Opposition leaders condemned PM Modi for accepting the honours during his visit to Israel, while India wanted its 10,000 citizens to leave Iran. Other than Jairam Ramesh, the other leaders who criticised Modi were AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, Sachin Pilot and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi.
